Why we pick it

Works with
eBayVintedEtsyDepopTikTok ShopWhatnot

Suits a sole trader who banks with NatWest, RBS, Ulster Bank or Mettle, since those business accounts include FreeAgent at no extra cost. You can file your Self Assessment return to HMRC from inside the app.

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Sole traders banking with NatWest Group or Mettle

You are a sole trader who banks with NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Ulster Bank or Mettle. Those business accounts include FreeAgent at no extra cost, so if you already bank there, use it.

It suits you if you want to file Self Assessment from the same app that holds the books.

A typical user sells clothes or collectables on Vinted and eBay, pays the payouts into a NatWest Group business account, and wants the tax return done in the same place.

02

Invoicing, bank feeds and receipt scanning

FreeAgent covers invoicing, expense tracking, bank feeds, VAT, Self Assessment and Making Tax Digital submissions. For Mettle customers, FreeAgent's terms require at least one transaction a month through the account.

Without a qualifying bank account, FreeAgent is a paid subscription; its site lists the current price.

It also reads receipts you photograph and pulls the amount and date from them, which saves typing for each packaging order.

03

Claiming it through your bank and connecting the feed

Open the qualifying business account, then claim FreeAgent through the bank's offer. Connect the bank feed and add categories for stock, postage, packaging and platform fees.

Upload receipts for mailers and stock as you buy them. FreeAgent builds a running tax estimate from your records, which tells you how much to set aside each month.

Set up the bank feed first, then backfill the current tax year from your statements, so the tax estimate covers your full year to date.

04

Sage, Xero or QuickBooks instead

Sage has a free plan for non-VAT sole traders who bank elsewhere.

Xero and QuickBooks suit a business that has grown into VAT, staff or a limited company, for a monthly fee.

Pick FreeAgent over Sage if you already bank with one of the qualifying banks, since you get the full product at no cost; pick Sage if you'd rather keep your current bank.

Kit for this step

05

Filing Self Assessment from FreeAgent

FreeAgent prepares your Self Assessment return from the records you keep, and you file it to HMRC from the app. Review the figures before you submit: the return is your responsibility.

If Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to you, FreeAgent handles the quarterly updates too. gov.uk sets out the thresholds and dates.

Keep a list of allowable costs nearby, such as packaging, postage, platform fees and a share of your phone bill, and confirm against HMRC's guidance on what counts.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Close the qualifying bank account and the free access ends. Check before you switch banks.
  • A Mettle account that goes a month without a transaction can lose free access; make at least one transaction each month.
  • Review the categories before you file, or the return can misstate your costs.
  • Personal spending in the business account clutters the feed, so keep the two apart.
  • Import the earlier months of the tax year from before you joined; without them the tax estimate runs short.
