Why this setup

You sell makeup and skincare on TikTok Shop, post videos most days and ship 10 to 50 orders a week.

You sell beauty products on TikTok by showing swatches and textures up close. Your corner needs flattering front light and clear sound, with a plain backdrop behind the product.

After a video takes off, you get a burst of orders. Keep two weeks of packaging in stock so you don’t miss dispatch deadlines after a busy weekend.

The kit

Every item, why it’s here and what it typically costs in the UK.

Label printerStarter pick

Phomemo thermal label printer

Costs less than most thermal printers and fits on a shelf. It prints the same 100 x 150 mm labels, so your label stock carries over if you upgrade later.

Typical price£70 to £110

ScalesStarter pick

500 g precision pocket scale

Card orders often sit within a few grams of a Royal Mail weight limit. A precise small scale tells you whether a mailer goes as a Large Letter or a parcel.

Typical price£8 to £14

Phone mountStarter pick

150 cm phone tripod with remote

Clothing and trainer shows need a full-body or full-shoe shot from in front. A tripod gets the phone to eye height and the remote starts recording from across the room.

Typical price£18 to £30

Daylight in a spare room shifts through the day. Set the ring light once and your items look the same in the evening show as in your photos.

How to lay it out

Where everything goes, so each order moves one way through the room.

  1. 1

Ring light in front, tripod inside it

Set the phone in the centre of the ring light at eye height. The ring spreads even light across your face and the product, and the phone casts no shadow.

  2. 2

    Light box beside the desk

Take listing photos in the light tent so each shot has the same background and light.

  3. 3

    Tubs by product type

Label clear tubs by brand or product type, so you spot low stock and reorder before a video sells out.

  4. 4

    One packing session each evening

Pack and label everything sold that day in one session. Glass goes in boxes, everything else in padded envelopes.

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Filming in the corner

Keep a plain surface beside the ring light for swatches. Film three or four short clips in one go while the light and makeup are ready.

Swatch on the back of your hand or a clean card under the light, then hold the product to the lens for the label. Use the light tent for stills of the packaging.

03

Tubs by product line

Sort stock into the tubs, such as lip or skincare. Label the tub ends, and keep best sellers at the front.

Note batch numbers and expiry dates on anything with a shelf life. Sell older stock first and bin expired items.

04

Packing makeup and skincare

Compacts and palettes break when they bang around, so wrap them in bubble wrap and send in a box. Lipsticks and tubes travel fine in padded envelopes.

Put liquids in a sealed bag inside the parcel in case a cap loosens. Check Royal Mail's prohibited and restricted items list for anything flammable, such as some nail polish and perfume, before you post it.

05

Reordering packaging

At 10 to 50 orders a week, a pack of 100 padded envelopes lasts a month or more. Reorder when you open your last pack, so you hold at least two weeks of stock.

Labels for the small printer come in rolls. Keep a spare, and print a test label after loading so you know it is aligned before a batch.

06

Scaling past 50 orders

Past 50 orders a week, move packing to a separate table or room so the light stays set up.

A larger label printer and a parcel scale for heavier bundles come next. You may want TikTok Shop's fulfilment options at this point, so read the current terms in Seller Center before deciding.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Filming swatches under a warm bulb, so shades look different on screen and buyers return the product.
  • Running out of envelopes the day after a video goes viral and missing TikTok Shop's dispatch deadline.
  • Posting a palette in a padded envelope and getting a cracked pan back as a refund claim.
  • Ignoring expiry dates and sending an out-of-date serum to a buyer who checks.
  • Posting nail polish or perfume without checking Royal Mail's restricted items rules first.

When to upgrade

At about 30 orders a week, add two LED panels for glare-free close-ups of glossy packaging. At 50, move to a fanfold thermal printer. At 60, put tubs on shelving instead of the floor.

  • 30+ Two LED video panels with stands
  • 50+ MUNBYN thermal label printer
  • 60+ 5-tier steel shelving

Questions

Can I post makeup and skincare from home?

Most cosmetics are fine if sealed and packed so they can’t leak. Perfume and aerosols have restrictions on many services, so check before you list them.

Do I need a camera, or is my phone enough?

Your phone is enough. A ring light and a clear mic improve a TikTok video more than a better camera does.

How much packaging should I keep in stock?

Keep two weeks of packaging at your busiest week’s rate. A video that takes off can bring a rush of orders in a weekend.

Should I film product videos and pack on the same day?

Film in the morning when the light is good and pack in the evening. Keep the two tasks in separate parts of the room if you can.

How do I stop liquids leaking in the post?

Tape the cap, put the item in a sealed bag, then wrap it. Check the cap again before sealing the parcel.

Do I need a light tent if I have a ring light?

The ring light is for video. The light tent gives clean, shadow-free stills of the packaging for your shop listings.
