The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

02

Packing a bag

Stuff the bag with tissue so it holds its shape. Wrap metal hardware in tissue so it can’t scratch the leather.

Put the bag in its dust bag, then a presentation box, then a padded double-wall outer box. Never post a structured bag in a mailing bag.

Add any receipt copy, cards or tags inside the box, and note in the listing that they’re included.

03

Storing bags

Store each bag stuffed and in a dust bag, standing upright on a shelf. Don’t hang bags by their straps, as it stretches them over time.

Keep them out of direct sun and damp. Label each shelf spot and match it to the listing so you can find a sold bag quickly.

04

Photos, listings and authenticity

Shoot the front, back, base corners, interior, zips, hardware, stitching, any date code or serial tag, and every mark. Hidden wear is the most common reason for a return.

eBay runs an authenticity check on some designer bags and Vinted offers optional verification on some items. Check what applies before listing, and keep your proof of purchase with each bag.

Never list a bag as authentic if you can’t back it up. Platforms remove counterfeit listings and can close accounts.

05

Selling bags live

On Whatnot and TikTok Shop, open the bag on camera and show the inside, the hardware and the corners up close. Buyers ask about condition, so show it before the questions start.

Keep higher-value bags for slower, scheduled shows. Fast auctions suit accessories and lower-priced pieces better.

06

Postage and scaling up

Use a tracked and signed-for service for higher-value bags so you have proof of delivery. Check the carrier’s compensation limits match what the bag is worth.

Past 50 orders, stock dust bags and outer boxes in sizes that fit most of your bags. Keep a short condition checklist and fill it in for every bag before you list it.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Posting a structured bag in a mailing bag; box it with tissue stuffing and padding.
  • Leaving hardware unwrapped; wrap it in tissue so it doesn’t scratch the leather.
  • Skipping close-ups of corners and handles; show all wear so returns don’t come back as ‘not as described’.
  • Listing without proof of purchase; keep receipts and check the platform’s authenticity rules first.
  • Posting a high-value bag untracked; use a signed-for service with enough cover.
  • Hanging bags by their straps in storage; stuff them and stand them upright in dust bags.

Selling designer handbags

Handbag buyers check every seam, corner and zip. Photograph each one in your show and in the listing, and keep receipts or proof of purchase with the bag.

Ship every bag in its dust bag, stuffed with tissue so it holds its shape, inside a box. A crushed bag usually comes back as a return.
