The guide
Each step in the order you'll need it.
Handbag and leather goods resellers
Dust bags suit you if you resell handbags on eBay, Vinted and Depop, or sell leather goods, designer accessories or pre-loved luxury pieces. A buyer paying a few hundred pounds for a bag expects a soft drawstring cover, as they would get from a shop.
Many pre-owned bags come without their original dust bag. A plain cotton one fills that gap at low cost, and the buyer keeps it for storage.
A pack of 10 covers a few bags a week. Past ten bags a month, buy larger packs or two sizes so each bag gets a cover that fits.
Cotton, drawstring and the right cover size
Choose breathable cotton or a cotton blend with a drawstring closure. Leather needs air; a plastic cover traps moisture and can mark the finish or encourage mould over time.
Compare the stated size with your stock. A cover should hold the bag with its handles laid flat and a little room to spare, so it slides in without folding the leather. Medium covers suit most shoulder bags; totes and weekenders need large ones, and clutches and wallets suit small.
Plain undyed or cream cotton keeps dye off pale leather. Before you use a coloured cover, wash one to test that it holds its colour.
Packing a handbag for posting
Stuff the bag with scrunched acid-free tissue paper to hold its shape, and wrap any metal hardware in a small piece of tissue so it cannot scratch the leather. Lay the handles flat or tuck them inside the body.
Slide the bag into the dust bag, pull the drawstring closed and tie it loosely. Wrap the covered bag in a layer of bubble wrap or honeycomb paper and pack it in a double-wall carton sized to the bag, with fill round every side.
A card with care notes is optional. The dust bag presents the bag and the outer box protects it.
Tissue for fashion bags, a box for luxury pieces
For lower-priced fashion bags, a few sheets of acid-free tissue paper give a tidy reveal for a fraction of the cost, and the buyer is unlikely to expect a cover.
For high-value pieces, add a rigid presentation box on top of the dust bag. Use both when a bag sells for several hundred pounds and the buyer may gift it.
Kit for this step
£1 to £1.80 a cover, and the original bags
At £10 to £18 for 10, each dust bag costs about £1 to £1.80. On a handbag sale of £60 or more, that is a small share of the price, and the buyer sees you took care.
Write the item condition in the listing and keep the dust bag clean and plain, so the buyer takes it as part of the purchase. Keep any original branded dust bags with the item they came with and describe them in the listing: buyers of designer pieces check for them.
Common mistakes
Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.
- Plastic traps moisture against a leather finish. Use a breathable cotton cover.
- Buy a cover a size up for structured bags; folding one to fit a small cover leaves creases.
- A dust bag gives no crush protection on its own, so pack the bag in a padded carton.
- Bare metal hardware rubs the leather in transit. Wrap buckles and clasps in tissue first.
- Describe exactly what is included. Passing a plain cover off as the original brand dust bag misleads the buyer.

Questions
Do buyers expect a dust bag with a pre-owned handbag?
Buyers of designer and leather bags often do. A plain cotton cover meets that expectation if the original is missing.
Cotton or polyester dust bags?
Cotton breathes, which suits leather. Synthetic covers cost less but can trap moisture.
Should I say the dust bag is original?
Only if it is. State in the listing whether the bag comes with its original cover or a plain replacement.
What size dust bag do I need?
Measure the bag with handles flat and add a few centimetres. Keep a medium and a large size if you sell a mix of bags.
Can I post a handbag in a dust bag inside a mailing bag?
Soft slouchy bags can travel that way. Structured bags need a box, since crushing one can leave permanent creases.
Can I wash and reuse dust bags?
Cotton covers wash well. Send buyers a clean, pressed cover, since a creased one undoes the effect.
