The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

How Marketplace works for a home seller

You list from the Facebook app with photos, a price, a category and a rough location. People nearby see it in their feed and in search, then message you to ask questions or arrange a collection.

Buyers message several sellers at once, and the first reply usually gets the sale. Turn notifications on and answer within the hour.

02

Photos for bulky items

Clear a wall or a corner of the garage and shoot big items in daylight. Show the whole piece first, then close-ups of wear, drawers and labels.

Add a photo with a tape measure across the top, so the buyer knows it fits through their door before they drive over.

03

Collections that run on time

Agree a time in Messenger and confirm on the morning. For furniture, ask the buyer to bring a second person and a car or van that fits it.

Keep small sold items by the door in a bag with the buyer’s name, so a collection takes a minute.

05

Meeting buyers safely

For anything small, meet in a busy public place in daylight. For furniture at home, have someone with you and keep the item near the front door.

Hand the item over only once the cash is counted or the transfer shows in your banking app.

06

Keeping stock ready to go

Store listed items together with a tag showing the price, so you can answer a message without searching.

Big items eat space, so list them the day they come in and drop the price after a week without messages.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Replying hours later loses the sale to a faster seller. Turn on notifications.
  • Leaving out measurements wastes trips, so put them in a photo and in the description.
  • Clicking a payment link from a buyer can hand over your account. Take cash or a transfer you can see.
  • Quoting postage before weighing the parcel eats your margin. Weigh it packed first.
  • Posting heavy furniture rarely pays, so keep bulky stock for collection.

Selling on Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace shows your listing to people near you, and most UK sales end with the buyer collecting and paying in person. Furniture, garden tools, prams and anything too big for a Royal Mail parcel sell well here.

Some sellers see a shipping option at checkout; if your account doesn’t offer it, agree postage with the buyer in Messenger and send it with Evri or Royal Mail. You need a clear photo spot for large items, notifications switched on and a plan for collections.

Questions

Straight answers to what sellers ask about this.

Does Facebook Marketplace charge UK sellers?

Listing and selling for collection costs nothing. If your account offers checkout with shipping, Facebook shows any fee before you confirm the sale. Facebook sets those terms in its Marketplace help centre, and they change.

Can I post items to buyers?

Yes. Where Facebook offers checkout with shipping, the buyer pays in the app and you post within the time shown. Otherwise, agree the postage price in Messenger, take payment you can confirm, then post with tracking.

How do I take payment for a collection?

Cash on the doorstep, or a bank transfer you see land in your account before the buyer leaves. A screenshot of a payment proves nothing.

Which messages are scams?

Buyers who offer to pay by a link, ask you to “verify” your account, want a code sent to your phone or offer extra for a courier they arrange. Keep the chat in Messenger and ignore links.

Do I need to tell HMRC about my sales?

Selling your own unwanted things usually isn’t taxable. Buying to resell is trading: the £1,000 trading allowance covers small amounts, and above it you register for Self Assessment. HMRC’s guidance on selling online has the details.

Can I list the same item on other apps?

Yes. List bulky items here and smaller ones on eBay or Vinted too, and mark the item sold everywhere the moment it goes.
