The guide
Each step in the order you'll need it.
Who a pocket LED light suits
Buy one as your first light to lift the shadow side of a card, a ring or a watch face. Once you add bigger panels, keep it as the small fill beside them.
If you sell jewellery, coins or crystals, hold it close to the item to bring out sparkle and edge detail. It works on Whatnot, eBay, Vinted or Depop, whatever your order volume.
Battery, colour temperature and CRI
Choose a built-in rechargeable battery with USB-C charging, adjustable brightness and adjustable colour temperature, often around 2,500 to 6,500 K. Look for a CRI of 95 or above so gold keeps its true colour on camera.
A cold-shoe mount and a quarter-inch thread let you fix it to a phone rig, a tripod or a desk arm. A magnetic back helps on steel shelving.
Placing it opposite your main light
Fix it to the phone mount or a mini tripod a short distance from the item, on the side opposite your main light. Dim it until shadows soften but still show: jewellery needs some shadow to look three-dimensional.
For photos in a 40 cm photo light box, point it through the side panel to add a highlight. Charge it after each show so it's ready next time.
Panels, ring lights and softboxes
Two LED video panels with stands light both sides of your desk and suit live card shows. A premium battery-powered LED panel gives more output than the pocket light and costs more.
An 18 in ring light with stand suits face-on talking shows. For clothing, two softbox lights with stands cover a larger area.
Battery and running cost
At £15 to £25, the light is a small cost spread across your orders. Battery life varies by model and brightness, so check the listing and test a full show at your usual setting.
Plug it in during long shows through its USB-C port. If the battery fades fast after a year or two, replace the light.
Common mistakes
Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.
- One pocket light can't carry a whole live show. Add a main light and keep this as fill.
- On the same side as the main light, it leaves the shadows hard. Move it to the opposite side to soften them.
- At full brightness the light flattens the sparkle on a ring, so dim it until highlights show.
- Set it to the same colour temperature as your main light so the two don't clash on camera.
- If the battery goes flat mid-show you lose the fill, so charge it after each show.

Questions
Is a pocket light enough for Whatnot?
As a first light for a short show, it helps. For regular shows, add side panels and keep this as fill.
Does it fit on a phone tripod?
Most have a cold-shoe foot or a quarter-inch thread. Check your tripod has a matching mount.
Can I use it for jewellery photos?
Yes, placed low and to the side, it brings out facets and metal edges.
How long does the battery last?
That varies by model and brightness. Test it at your usual setting before a long show.

Softboxes spread light over a big area, so a whole outfit or a rail of stock gets even light with soft shadows. They take more floor space than panels and suit a spare room better than a desk.
