Prompts that write a decent Vinted or eBay listing, where AI photos break platform rules, and the automation that can get an account restricted.
A chatbot can turn your notes on a jumper into a tidy title and description in under a minute. It cannot see the bobbling on the cuff, check the size label or know what the same jumper sold for last week. The facts come from you.
Use it for titles and descriptions, with the prompts we use below. Keep it away from your photos and your account: some photo edits cross a platform line, and bump bots can get an account restricted.
Kit for this
The products this guide uses, with typical UK prices.
40 cm photo light box
Consistent white-background photos make your listings look like a shop. The box folds flat when you need the desk back.
Typical price£25 to £40
See on Amazon150 cm phone tripod with remote
Clothing and trainer shows need a full-body or full-shoe shot from in front. A tripod gets the phone to eye height and the remote starts recording from across the room.
Typical price£18 to £30
See on AmazonPocket LED video light
Clips to a phone mount or sits on the desk to lift the shadow side of a card or a piece of jewellery. It costs little as a first light and works as a fill once you add panels.
Typical price£15 to £25
See on Amazon18 in ring light with stand
Daylight in a spare room shifts through the day. Set the ring light once and your items look the same in the evening show as in your photos.
Typical price£35 to £60

Give the chatbot facts first
ChatGPT or Claude write well from notes and badly from guesses. Before you prompt, write down the brand, the size on the label, the measurements in centimetres, the fabric from the care tag, the colour as you would describe it to a friend and every flaw.
Paste those notes in and ask for a listing. If you only upload a photo, the model fills gaps with plausible inventions: a fabric it assumed, a size it read wrong, a decade it guessed.
Prompts that work for Vinted and eBay
For Vinted: "Write a Vinted listing from these notes. Title under 60 characters with brand, item type, size and colour. Description of 4 short lines: condition with any flaws first, measurements, fabric, how it fits. Plain UK English, no hashtags, no emojis, no claims I have not given you."
For eBay: "Write an eBay UK title of up to 80 characters that front-loads brand, model, size and colour, then a description with condition, measurements and flaws. List the item specifics you would fill in as a table. Mark anything you are unsure of as CHECK."
With the CHECK instruction, the model lists its guesses and you verify each one against the item before you publish.
eBay's own AI listing tool
eBay's app can draft a listing from a photo: title, category, item specifics and a suggested price. eBay calls it magical listing, and it runs for private sellers in the UK.
The draft can misidentify an item or leave specifics blank, and the condition and flaws are still yours to write. Read every field before you hit list.
Background removal and AI model photos
eBay's app removes a messy background and swaps in white or a plain colour. The item stays as it is, so a buyer sees the real thing on a clean backdrop.
AI model shots, where software puts your dress on a generated person, are riskier. Vinted's catalogue rules ask for photos you took of the item as it is, with no image editing, and ban stock and advert images. eBay bans photos that don't accurately represent the item and stock photos for used items. A generated model can change the drape or colour, and a buyer can open a not as described claim on that.
If you use an edited image at all, put real, unedited photos first, show every flaw, and check the platform's current photo rules before you rely on it.
Start from a sharp, evenly lit photo
AI cleanup needs a good original. A phone on a tripod gives you the same angle for every item, and a small LED light or ring light fills the shadows a window leaves on a dull day.
For small items such as jewellery, trainers or beauty, a folding light box gives a white background straight out of the camera, so you skip the editing step.
AI pricing against sold listings
A chatbot prices from its training data and cannot see what sold this week on Vinted or eBay. Use it to suggest search terms, then check the real sold prices yourself.
On eBay, filter search results to sold items. On Vinted, look at sold listings for the same brand and size. Price from the middle of what sold; asking prices on live listings run higher.
Auto-bump, relist bots and your account
Tools that bump, relist, follow or message on a timer break the terms on both platforms. Vinted's terms ban external software tools including bots unless Vinted allows them. eBay's user agreement bans robots, scrapers and other automated access without eBay's express permission.
Restriction can mean a pause on listing or a closed account, and that can happen with sales in progress. Vinted's own paid bump and eBay's promoted listings sit inside the rules. Cross-listing apps that use official connections are a separate case: check how a tool connects before you hand it your login.

Questions
Can I use ChatGPT to write my Vinted listings?
Yes. Give the chatbot your measurements and flaws, and check its output against the item before you post.
Are AI model photos allowed on Vinted?
Vinted's catalogue rules ask for photos you took of the item as it is, with no image editing. A generated model photo sits outside that. Use real photos of the actual item.
Is eBay's background removal tool allowed?
Yes, it is eBay's own tool in the app. It changes only the backdrop, so the photo still shows what the buyer gets.
Can AI tell me what to charge?
It can suggest search terms and a rough range. Price from sold listings on the platform you sell on, checked in the last few weeks.
Will a Vinted auto-bump bot get me banned?
It can. Vinted's terms ban bots and other external software tools unless Vinted allows them. Use Vinted's paid bump if you want more views.
Do I need a light box if I use AI background removal?
Not for clothes. For small items, a light box gives a clean white shot first time and saves an editing pass.
