The kit for AI for online sellers: listings, photos and pricing, laid out on a plain background

Before you start

Prompts that write a solid eBay or Poshmark listing, where AI photos break platform rules, and the automation that can get an account restricted.

A chatbot can turn your notes on a sweater into a clean title and description in under a minute. It cannot see the pilling on the cuff, check the size tag or know what the same sweater sold for last week. The facts come from you.

Use it for titles and descriptions, with the prompts we use below. Keep it away from your photos and your account: some photo edits cross a platform line, and sharing bots can get an account restricted.

Kit for this

The products this guide uses, with typical US prices.

Photo backdropStarter pick

16-inch photo light box

Matching white-background photos make your listings look like a store. The box folds flat when you need the desk back.

Typical price$18 to $45

Phone mountStarter pick

60-inch phone tripod with remote

Clothing and sneaker shows need a full-body or full-shoe shot from the front. A tripod gets the phone to eye level and the remote starts recording from across the room.

Typical price$15 to $35

LightingStarter pick

Pocket LED video light

Clips to a phone mount or sits on the desk to lift the shadow side of a card or a ring. It costs little as a first light and stays useful as fill once you add panels.

Typical price$15 to $30

18-inch ring light with stand

Daylight in a spare room shifts through the day. Set the ring light once and your items look the same in the evening show as in your photos.

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Give the chatbot facts first

ChatGPT or Claude write well from notes and badly from guesses. Before you prompt, write down the brand, the size on the tag, the measurements in inches, the fabric from the care label, the color as you would describe it to a friend and every flaw.

Paste those notes in and ask for a listing. If you only upload a photo, the model fills gaps with plausible inventions: a fabric it assumed, a size it misread, a decade it guessed.

02

Prompts that work for eBay and Poshmark

For Poshmark: "Write a Poshmark listing from these notes. Title under 80 characters with brand, item type, size and color. Description of 4 short lines: condition with any flaws first, measurements, fabric, fit. Plain US English, no emojis, no claims I have not given you."

For eBay: "Write an eBay title of up to 80 characters that front-loads brand, model, size and color, then a description with condition, measurements and flaws. List the item specifics you would fill in as a table. Mark anything you are unsure of as CHECK."

With the CHECK instruction, the model lists its guesses and you verify each one against the item before you publish.

03

eBay's own AI listing tool

eBay's app can draft a listing from a photo: title, category, item specifics and a suggested price. eBay calls it magical listing, and US sellers have it in the app.

The draft can misidentify an item or leave specifics blank, and the condition and flaws are still yours to write. Read every field before you hit list.

04

Background removal and AI model photos

eBay's app removes a messy background and swaps in white or a plain color. The item stays as it is, so a buyer sees the real thing on a clean backdrop.

AI model shots, where software puts your dress on a generated person, carry more risk. eBay bans photos that don't accurately represent the item and stock photos for used items, and Poshmark and Mercari ask for photos of the actual item. A generated model can change the drape or color, and a buyer can open a not as described claim on that.

If you use an edited image at all, put real, unedited photos first, show every flaw, and check the platform's current photo rules before you rely on it.

06

AI pricing against sold listings

A chatbot prices from its training data and cannot see what sold this week on eBay or Poshmark. Use it to suggest search terms, then check the real sold prices yourself.

On eBay, filter search results to sold items. On Poshmark and Mercari, filter to sold listings for the same brand and size. Price from the middle of what sold; asking prices on live listings run higher.

07

Auto-share bots and your account

Tools that share, relist, follow or message on a timer can break platform terms. eBay's user agreement bans robots, scrapers and other automated access without eBay's express permission, and Poshmark's terms limit automated activity on the site.

Restriction can mean a pause on listing or a closed account, and that can happen with sales in progress. eBay's promoted listings and Poshmark's own tools sit inside the rules. Cross-listing apps that use official connections are a separate case: check how a tool connects before you hand it your login.

Checklist

Run through it before each one goes out.

  1. 1Write the size, measurements, fabric and flaws before you prompt
  2. 2Ask the chatbot to mark anything unsure as CHECK
  3. 3Read every field in an eBay magical listing draft
  4. 4Lead with real, unedited photos that show flaws
  5. 5Check sold prices yourself, not the chatbot's guess
  6. 6Turn off any third-party sharing or relist bot

Questions

Straight answers to what sellers ask about this.

Can I use ChatGPT to write my eBay listings?

Yes. Give the chatbot your measurements and flaws, and check its output against the item before you post.

Are AI model photos allowed on Poshmark?

Poshmark asks for photos of the actual item you are selling. A generated model photo can misrepresent fit and color, so use real photos of the item.

Is eBay's background removal tool allowed?

Yes, it is eBay's own tool in the app. It changes only the backdrop, so the photo still shows what the buyer gets.

Can AI tell me what to charge?

It can suggest search terms and a rough range. Price from sold listings on the platform you sell on, checked in the last few weeks.

Will a Poshmark sharing bot get me banned?

It can. Read Poshmark's terms on automated activity before you use one, and share by hand if you are unsure.

Do I need a light box if I use AI background removal?

Not for clothes. For small items, a light box gives a clean white shot first time and saves an editing pass.
