The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

02

Packing jewelry so it arrives untangled

Fasten chains before boxing, then lay them flat in the foam so they can't knot. Put rings in a ring slot and earrings on a card. Slide the box into a padded mailer and seal it well.

For pricier pieces, use a presentation box inside a small outer box. The presentation box protects the piece, and the outer box takes the knocks in transit.

03

Storing stock you can find

Store each piece in its own small bag with a SKU, sorted in a tray or drawer by type. Keep silver in sealed bags to slow tarnish. Note the SKU in your listing so you can pick in seconds.

Keep valuable pieces somewhere secure, and keep a list with photos for insurance.

04

Photos and listings

Shoot on a plain background in diffused light, then add a close-up of any stamp and a shot on a hand or stand for scale. Show the clasp working and any wear. Name the metal and the stones in the listing.

State metal, karat or sterling mark, size, length and weight in the listing. Don't call a piece gold or silver unless you can back it up; plated pieces should say plated.

05

Selling jewelry live

TikTok Shop and Whatnot both host jewelry shows. Use an overhead arm and a ring light to catch sparkle, and show each piece on a hand. Keep pieces in numbered bags in sale order.

Pack each sold piece into its box straight after the show so nothing goes missing.

06

Shipping and growing past 50 orders

Most jewelry ships in a padded mailer by USPS Ground Advantage, which needs tracking, so skip plain letter mail. A rigid box can push a cheap mailer into a higher price band, so weigh it packed. Add signature confirmation and enough insurance for valuable pieces.

Past 50 orders, buy boxes and mailers in your common sizes and set up a packing tray with everything in reach. Keep tissue and stickers ready if you sell gifts.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Fasten the clasp and lay each chain flat, or it arrives knotted.
  • State the metal only when a stamp or test confirms it, or you will get returns.
  • Skipping a scale shot makes buyers guess the size, so photograph every piece on a hand or stand.
  • Leaving silver open to the air tarnishes stock, so store it in sealed bags.
  • Buy insurance that matches the value of the piece, or a loss costs you the difference.

Questions

Straight answers to what sellers ask about this.

How do I photograph jewelry?

Use a light box, a plain background and a macro shot of any karat stamp or maker's mark. Add a shot on a hand or stand for scale.

Should I ship jewelry with insurance?

For anything over about $100, yes. USPS Ground Advantage includes tracking and some insurance, and you can add more coverage and signature confirmation for pricier pieces.

What can I call gold or silver in a listing?

The FTC Jewelry Guides set how to describe metals: "sterling" means 92.5% silver, and a karat mark like 14K must match the gold content. Say plated or filled when a piece is. Read the guides on ftc.gov before you describe a piece by its metal.

How do I stop silver tarnishing in stock?

Store each piece in a sealed bag away from humidity, with an anti-tarnish strip inside.

Where should I sell jewelry?

Poshmark, Mercari and Depop suit fashion jewelry and mid-priced pieces. Etsy is the home for handmade and vintage, and eBay finds buyers for fine jewelry and watches.

Should I include a gift box?

For anything sold as a gift, yes. A simple box costs little and stops the piece moving in transit.
