The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

How Mercari works for a home seller

You list with photos, a title, a condition and a shipping option. Buyers find it through search and saved searches, so a clear title with the brand and model matters most.

Toys, video games, small electronics and kitchen items sell next to clothing, so you can clear a garage or flip finds from yard sales in one place.

02

Fees and what you keep

The 10% fee applies to the item price and any shipping the buyer pays. On a $40 sale with $8 buyer-paid shipping, the fee is $4.80.

If you pay shipping yourself, the label comes off your earnings too. Price low-cost items so the label and the fee still leave something for you.

03

Photos that answer questions

Shoot on a plain background in daylight, with the whole item in the first photo. Add photos of model numbers, serials, battery covers and any marks.

For electronics, show the item powered on. Buyers trust a screen showing the working item more than a note that says tested.

04

Weighing and labels

Mercari labels are priced by weight, so a scale that reads ounces stops you paying for the next band up. Weigh the item packed, then pick the shipping option that fits.

Print the label on a 4 × 6 in thermal label, stick it flat and drop the package with the carrier on the label. USPS will also pick up from your door for free.

06

Keeping mixed stock in order

Give each shelf or bin a number and put it in the listing's description notes or a spreadsheet. Mixed stock is hard to find without it.

Store small items in clear bins by category, and keep larger items on shelving near your packing table.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • If you guess the weight, the carrier can charge the difference to your balance, so weigh every item packed before you list.
  • Offering free shipping on heavy items can wipe out your earnings, so check the label cost first.
  • Search can't match a vague title, so include the brand, model and size.
  • Missing photos of marks and serials leads to returns, so show the details buyers ask about.
  • Shipping late can cancel the sale, so ship within the handling time you set.

Selling on Mercari

You can list from your phone in a few minutes, and buyers find items through search and saved searches in any category. Toys, electronics, games, home goods and clothing all sell, which suits you if you have mixed stock.

Mercari takes a flat 10% selling fee on the item price plus the shipping the buyer pays, with no listing fee and no separate payment processing fee. You choose who pays shipping and print a Mercari label once the item sells. For the room, you need a photo spot, a scale that reads ounces and shelves or bins in listing order.

Questions

Straight answers to what sellers ask about this.

What does Mercari charge sellers?

Mercari charges a 10% selling fee on the item price plus any shipping the buyer pays. There is no listing fee and no separate payment processing fee. Buyers pay their own fee at checkout, which does not come out of your earnings.

How does shipping work on Mercari?

When you list, you pick a shipping option and whether you or the buyer pays. After the sale, Mercari gives you a prepaid label for USPS, UPS or FedEx to print. Weigh the packed item first, because the label is priced by weight.

What if my package weighs more than I listed?

The carrier can charge the difference, and it comes out of your balance. Weigh the item in its mailer before you list and round up to the next weight tier.

When does Mercari pay me?

Your sale completes once the buyer rates the order, or automatically a few days after delivery. The money then sits in your balance, and you can transfer it to your bank.

Should I offer free shipping?

Free shipping listings rank well with buyers, but the label comes out of your sale. Build the label cost into your price, and keep it for light items where the label is cheap.

Can I sell local on Mercari?

Mercari Local lets a driver pick up larger items that are hard to ship. Check the help center for whether it serves your ZIP code before you list furniture or other bulky items.

Does Mercari let buyers make offers?

Yes. Buyers can send offers, and you can lower the price to alert people who liked the item.
