Why this setup

You are a parent with a second child on the way or out of diapers, clearing outgrown clothes and buying more at consignment sales and Goodwill, then selling 10 to 40 bundles a week on Poshmark and Mercari and branded pieces and nursery gear on eBay.

You buy baby clothes by the bag and sell them in bundles. A bag from a kids' consignment sale or a yard sale holds five sizes mixed with burp cloths and an odd sock, so start with a tub for each size and list nothing until it sits in the right tub.

Most of this stock is cotton, so shipping stays light. Ten bodysuits and four sleepers fold into a 10 × 13 inch poly mailer, so the printer, a small scale and two packs of mailers cover most weeks. Strollers and high chairs go on Facebook Marketplace for local pickup.

The kit

Every item, why it’s here and what it typically costs in the US.

StorageBest value

Clear stackable 32 qt bins, 4 pack×2

Mark each bin with a shelf code and record the code against the listing. When an item sells, the code in the listing tells you which bin to open.

Typical price$60 to $110

Label printerStarter pick

Phomemo thermal label printer

Costs less than most thermal printers and fits on a shelf. It prints the same 4 × 6 in labels, so your label stock carries over if you upgrade later.

Typical price$70 to $110

Phone mountStarter pick

60-inch phone tripod with remote

Clothing and sneaker shows need a full-body or full-shoe shot from the front. A tripod gets the phone to eye level and the remote starts recording from across the room.

Typical price$15 to $35

4 × 6 in thermal labels, 250 roll

Put a roll on a holder or inside a printer with a roll bay to save space on a crowded desk. Each label costs about 3 to 6 cents, a little more than fanfold.

How to lay it out

Where everything goes, so each order moves one way through the room.

  1. 1

    Size tubs under the window

Two four-packs of clear tubs, one per size from newborn to 18 to 24 months, stacked with the smallest at the top. Write the size on the lid and on the front so you can read it with the lid off.

  2. 2

Rail for the pieces that sell alone

Snowsuits, buntings, branded coats and party dresses hang on the rail. They photograph better on a hanger and stay unwrinkled while they wait for a single listing.

  3. 3

    Photo spot on the bed

A plain sheet on the bed and the phone on its tripod above it. Lay each bundle out in rows of three so a parent can count the pieces from the first photo.

  4. 4

    Packing shelf by the door

Mailers, the label printer and the scale on one shelf. Fold each bundle into a mailer as soon as it sells, label it and leave it in a basket for the next post office run or USPS pickup.

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Sorting a consignment sale haul in one evening

Tip the whole bag onto the bed and sort by the size on the label. Brands size differently, and parents filter by the label.

Pull out three piles as you go: single listings for the rail, stained or damaged pieces for textile recycling, and everything else into its size tub. Do the laundry the next morning in loads by color.

02

Building a bundle a parent wants

Group by size first, then by season and color. A 6 to 9 months winter bundle of sleepers, two cardigans and a hat answers a search a parent makes in October.

Put the piece count in the title and list each item in the description with its brand. Photograph the bundle laid out, then add two close-ups of the best labels.

03

Checks before any item goes in a tub

Hold each piece up to a window to find faint milk stains on the chest. Check each snap and zipper, and pull at buttons on knitwear.

Cut or remove any cord from a hood or neck. Keep clothes with loose buttons for older children and out of newborn bundles, where a baby can mouth them.

04

Shipping bundles and the odd bulky item

A folded bundle goes in a poly mailer, weighed and labeled. Poshmark sends a prepaid label the buyer has already paid for, and Mercari gives you a label at the weight you set, so weigh before you list. For eBay orders, print a USPS Ground Advantage label in eBay or Pirate Ship.

Bouncers, play mats and baby carriers go in a single-wall box with the straps tied down. Strollers, cribs and high chairs stay as local pickup.

05

Pricing by size and season

Newborn and 0 to 3 months bundles sell fastest because babies outgrow those sizes in weeks. Larger sizes move more slowly and need a lower price per piece.

Hold winter stock back until September and summer stock until April. A snowsuit listed in June can sit for months, while the same one listed in October goes in days.

06

Recalls and nursery gear

Search the brand and model on cpsc.gov before you list any baby carrier, bouncer, high chair or play yard. Keep recalled items off sale.

Photograph the model label and the date of manufacture. Parents ask for the year, so find it on the frame or under the seat before they do.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Sorting by how big an item looks instead of the size on the label, so a 9 to 12 months buyer opens a bundle with two pieces that do not fit.
  • Putting a hoodie with a drawstring into a toddler bundle when the cord should have come out first.
  • Listing a winter bundle in May and wondering why it sits while the same bundle would sell in a week in October.
  • Shipping a stroller and losing the profit to an oversized box rate when a local pickup sale costs nothing.
  • Leaving plain onesies as single listings that each cost more in fees and shipping than they sell for.

When to upgrade

At 25 bundles a week the tubs start to overflow, so a steel shelving unit gives each size its own shelf and frees the floor. At 40, crosslisting software puts a branded coat on Poshmark, Mercari and eBay from one listing and removes it from the others when it sells.

Questions

Straight answers to what sellers ask about this.

How many items should go in a baby clothes bundle?

Ten to fifteen pieces in one size and season dress a baby for a week and still fit one mailer. Weigh a finished bundle before you list it, because jeans and fleece push it into a heavier shipping tier.

Should I sell sleepers with snaps that have gone stiff?

Fix or remove them. A snap that will not close is a fault a buyer can file a claim over, and it is the first thing a parent tries. Bundle the item as a spare only if you say so in the description.

Is it worth listing single onesies?

Rarely. Plain multipack pieces sell for so little that the fee and label cost more than the onesie. Put them in bundles and keep single listings for named brands, outerwear and anything new with tags.

Can I sell a used wearable blanket or sleep sack?

Yes, if the zipper works, the fabric is clean and the size label is readable. Parents check the size and the fabric weight, so photograph the label. Leave out sacks with loose threads inside the neck or armholes.

Do I need to wash clothes before listing them?

Wash everything from a sale or a hand-me-down bag on a fragrance-free cycle, dry it fully and fold it. Parents ask about pets, smoke and detergent, so answer all three in the description before anyone messages.

Should I sell a stroller or high chair through this setup?

Sell them on Facebook Marketplace for local pickup. They will not fit a mailer, and a buyer checking the brakes and the straps in person leaves happier. Search the model on the CPSC recall list at cpsc.gov first.

Which items should I leave out?

Used car seats you cannot vouch for, inclined sleepers, crib bumpers and hoodies with drawstrings at the neck. Federal rules ban the sale of inclined sleepers and padded crib bumpers, and neck drawstrings on young children's clothing are a strangulation risk.
