1.88 inches is the width tape guns take. Six rolls keep a shop shipping a few boxes a week going for a few months.

Good for

  • Every box seller

Not for

  • Mailer-only sellers

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Who six rolls of brown tape suit

You need packing tape for each box you close, so this pack shows up in most setups on the site. It fits a spare-room shop shipping a few boxes a week as well as a garage operation sealing dozens a day.

If you ship mostly clothes in self-seal poly mailers, you will use far less: one pack can last a year, because tape comes out only for the occasional box or a split seam.

02

Width, length and the adhesive

Check each roll is 1.88 inches wide and around 55 to 110 yards long. That width suits standard tape dispensers and covers the center seam of a small box in one strip. Compare packs by total yards, since roll lengths vary.

Acrylic tape is the usual budget choice and holds well on clean, dry cardboard. Hot-melt tape grabs faster and copes better with a cold garage or dusty recycled board. Look for thickness in mils: tape under about 2 mil tears unevenly and can split along a box edge.

Brown tape blends with kraft boxes and hides scuffs. Pick clear tape if you tape over a label or reuse boxes that already carry print.

03

Sealing a box with an H pattern

Run one strip along the center seam on the top and another on the bottom, overlapping each end by 2 to 3 inches down the sides. The H pattern adds a strip across each edge seam too, which stops corners lifting on a heavy double-wall box.

Press each strip down with the flat of your hand as soon as it goes on. Acrylic adhesive bonds under pressure, and a firm rub stops the strip peeling up in a cold truck.

Load a roll into your tape gun and hang the spares on a hook above the packing table, so a change takes seconds.

04

Tape guns, self-seal mailers and paper tape

Add a tape gun once you seal more than a handful of boxes a week, and you stop hunting for the roll end.

If most of your orders are folded clothes, poly mailers or recyclable paper mailers seal with their own adhesive strip and need no tape. Paper tape suits you if you already use honeycomb paper wrap and want the whole package in the paper recycling.

05

Running cost per package

$10 to $18 buys six rolls, around 430 yards of tape. A small box sealed top and bottom with an H pattern uses 1.5 to 2 yards, so each box costs a few cents in tape.

Heat and humidity harden the adhesive and weaken the grip, so keep rolls out of a hot attic or a damp shed. Store them indoors, out of the sun, and use the oldest roll first.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Tape the top and the bottom of a heavy box. A top seam on its own leaves the bottom flaps free to open in a sorting hub.
  • Narrow 1-inch or 1.5-inch tape needs two strips per seam, which wipes out the saving; stick to 1.88 inches for boxes.
  • Brown tape over the shipping label can block the barcode scan. Use clear tape when a label needs protecting.
  • A loose roll end sticks back to itself. Fold a small tab under the end, or keep the roll in a gun.
  • Adhesive won't bond to dusty or damp cardboard, so wipe the flaps and pack in a dry room.

Questions

Straight answers to what sellers ask about this.

Is 1.88-inch tape the right width for a tape gun?

Yes. Most handheld tape guns take 1.88-inch rolls on a standard 3-inch core; check the gun listing if you buy a narrow or extra-wide model.

Brown or clear packing tape?

Brown blends into kraft boxes and hides marks. Clear tape suits reused boxes and taping over a label without hiding the barcode.

How long do six rolls last?

At around 20 boxes a week you use 30 to 40 yards, so six rolls cover a few months. If you ship clothes in mailers, you will use far less.

Can I recycle a box with plastic tape on it?

Most curbside programs accept boxes with some tape left on, but rules vary by town. Check your local recycling page, or switch to paper tape.

Does budget tape hold on packages?

Acrylic tape holds on clean, dry cardboard at room temperature. If boxes sit in a cold garage before pickup, a hot-melt tape grips better.
