48 mm is the width tape guns take. Six rolls last a shop sending a few boxes a week for a few months.
The guide
Each step in the order you'll need it.
Who six rolls of brown tape suit
You need parcel tape for each box you close, so this pack appears in most setups on the site. It fits a spare-room shop posting a few boxes a week as well as a garage operation sealing dozens a day.
If you post mainly clothes in self-seal mailing bags, you will use far less: one pack can last a year, because tape comes out only for the occasional box or a split seam.
48 mm, 66 m and the adhesive inside
Check each roll is 48 mm wide and 66 m long. That width suits standard tape dispensers and covers the centre seam of a small box in one strip, and 66 m is the common retail length, which keeps price comparisons between packs fair.
Acrylic tape is the usual budget choice and holds well on clean, dry board, while hot-melt and solvent tapes grip faster and cope better with cold garages or recycled board with a dusty surface. Check the listing for thickness in microns: thin tape tears off the roll unevenly and can split along a box edge.
Brown tape blends with kraft boxes and hides scuffs. Pick clear tape if you tape over a label or reuse boxes that already carry print.
Sealing a box with an H pattern
Run one strip along the centre seam on the top and another on the bottom, overlapping each end by around 5 to 7 cm down the sides. The H-seal pattern adds a strip across each edge seam too, which stops corners lifting on a heavy double-wall box.
Press each strip down with the flat of your hand as soon as it goes on. Acrylic adhesive bonds under pressure, and a firm rub stops the strip peeling up in a cold van.
Load a roll into your tape dispenser gun and hang the spares on a hook above the packing table, so a change takes seconds.
Kit for this step
Tape guns, self-seal bags and paper tape
Add the tape dispenser gun once you seal more than a handful of boxes a week, and you stop hunting for the roll end.
If most of your orders are folded clothes, Grey mailing bags or Recyclable paper mailing bags seal with their own adhesive strip and need no tape at all. Paper tape suits you if you already use Honeycomb paper wrap and want the whole parcel in the paper recycling.
Running cost per parcel
£5 to £9 buys six 66 m rolls, close to 400 m of tape. A small box sealed top and bottom with an H pattern uses around 1.5 to 2 m, so each box costs a few pence in tape.
Heat and damp harden the adhesive and weaken the grip, so keep rolls out of a hot loft or a damp shed. Store them indoors, out of the sun, and use the oldest roll first.
Common mistakes
Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.
- Tape the top and the bottom of a heavy box. A top seam on its own leaves the bottom flaps free to open in a depot.
- Narrow 25 mm or 36 mm tape needs two strips per seam, which wipes out the saving; stick to 48 mm for boxes.
- Brown tape over the postage label can block the barcode scan. Use clear tape when a label needs protecting.
- A loose roll end sticks back to itself. Fold a small tab under the end, or keep the roll in a gun.
- Adhesive won't bond to dusty or damp board, so wipe the flaps and pack in a dry room.

Questions
Is 48 mm tape the right width for a tape gun?
Yes. Most handheld tape dispensers take 48 mm rolls on a standard 3-inch core; check the gun listing if you buy a narrow or extra-wide model.
Brown or clear packing tape?
Brown blends into kraft boxes and hides marks. Clear tape suits reused boxes and taping over a label without hiding the barcode.
How long do six rolls last?
At around 20 boxes a week you use roughly 30 to 40 m, so six rolls cover a few months. If you post clothes in bags, you will use far less.
Can I recycle a box with plastic tape on it?
Most UK councils accept boxes with some tape left on, but rules vary. Check your council's recycling page, or switch to paper tape to settle it.
Does budget tape hold on parcels?
Acrylic tape holds on clean, dry board at room temperature. If boxes sit in a cold garage before collection, a hot-melt tape grips better.
