Self-seal poly bags add almost no weight, so a single garment posts as a small parcel. You can't see through the opaque grey film, and a label lies flat on it.

Good for

  • Single tops, skirts and folded jeans
  • Parcels left in lockers or wet porches
  • Folded clothing
  • Lowest cost per parcel

Not for

  • Coats and chunky knits that need a bigger bag
  • Anything that can bend or break

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Folded clothing on Vinted, Depop and eBay

Grey mailing bags suit clothing orders on Vinted, Depop and eBay. A folded T-shirt or a pair of jeans slides into a 10 x 14 inch bag. You press the strip closed, and the parcel weighs little more than the garment.

They also carry soft toys, pet beds and other items that can take a squash. A pack of 100 covers 100 orders.

02

Bag size, film thickness and seal strip

Match the bag size, in inches or millimetres, to your folded items. Ten by 14 inches, roughly 250 x 350 mm, takes one folded adult garment; a bulky hoodie or coat needs a 12 x 16 or 14 x 20 inch bag.

Film thickness is usually given in microns. Thicker film resists tearing on conveyor belts and sharp corners. Look for 50 microns or more on clothing. The bag should be opaque so the contents stay hidden, with a permanent peel-and-seal strip that tears the bag if someone opens it.

You can stick a thermal label on the matt grey outside or write on it in pen. Some packs include a second tear strip for returns, so check the listing if you accept them.

03

Packing a clothing order

Fold the garment to the bag size and slide it in. Add a sheet of tissue paper first if you want a neat reveal. Press the air out before you peel the strip and seal, so the bag sits flat and fits a slimmer postage format.

Stick the label on the flattest part of the front, away from the seal flap. Weigh the sealed bag on your scale and measure its thickness before you choose a service, because a bag that bulges can tip from one size band to the next. Royal Mail publishes the current limits for each format.

Keep the bags in an open box or a wall dispenser next to the folding area.

04

Paper bags, padded envelopes or a box

Recyclable paper mailing bags cost more per bag and go in kerbside paper recycling. Pick them if your shop promises low-plastic packaging or your buyers ask for it.

Fragile, flat or valuable items need more structure than a bag offers. Use a padded envelope for small items that need cushioning, and a small single-wall box for boxed goods that would crush.

05

8p to 13p a bag

At £8 to £13 for 100 bags, each bag costs about 8p to 13p. That low cost per order suits low-priced clothing where a few pence show up in the margin.

Buy a larger size once you list coats and knitwear. A thick jumper forced into a 10 x 14 inch bag splits the seam in transit, and a torn bag can lose the item.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Keep a larger size for knitwear and coats; a bulky jumper splits the seam of a small bag.
  • Press the air out before you seal, so the parcel stays thin.
  • Labels across the seal flap lift. Stick yours on the flat front panel.
  • Post fragile items in a padded envelope or a box.
  • Choose thick opaque film: clear or thin bags show the contents and tear on belts.

Questions

What fits in a 10 x 14 inch mailing bag?

One folded adult T-shirt, shirt or pair of jeans. Bulky knits and coats need a larger bag.

Are grey mailing bags waterproof?

Poly film keeps rain off the contents, and the seal strip closes the opening. Seal it fully and keep the label off the flap.

Can I reuse a mailing bag?

With an intact seal strip, or a new one added, yes. A resealed old bag looks second-hand to buyers.

Grey or paper mailing bags?

Grey poly costs less per bag and resists rain. Paper bags suit shops that want plastic-free parcels and kerbside recycling.

Do mailing bags count as a Large Letter?

It depends on the sealed size, thickness and weight. Measure the packed bag against Royal Mail's current limits.
