Why this setup

You pick up used golf clubs from club sales, part-exchange bins and house clearances and sell them singly on eBay, while retro sportswear and gym clothing goes on Depop, posting 20 to 80 parcels a week from the garage.

Golfers buy clubs by spec. A buyer hunting a 7 iron wants the model, loft, shaft flex and whether it is left or right handed in the title, so your listing time goes on reading shaft labels and photographing faces and soles. Single clubs often earn more than the set they came in.

Depop buyers shop by look: a 1990s tennis jacket or a training top shot on a person or a rail, with the fit described. The two trades share one garage, one scale and one printer, and the packing changes with each order.

The kit

ScalesBest value

40 kg digital parcel scale

A wrong weight costs you surcharges or overpaid postage. A flat platform scale with a separate display stays readable when a box covers the top.

Typical price£15 to £25

Label printerBest value

MUNBYN thermal label printer

It takes the standard 100 x 150 mm labels that eBay, Vinted and Whatnot all generate, and generic labels work, so the running cost stays low.

Typical price£55 to £85

TapeBest value

Tape dispenser gun

Once you ship more than a handful of boxes a week, a tape gun saves minutes on every session and stops tape ends sticking to themselves.

How to lay it out

Where everything goes, so each order moves one way through the room.

  1. 1

    Club racks on the left

Stand the clubs upright in tubs on one shelving unit, sorted into drivers and woods, irons, wedges and putters. Label each tub so you can pull a single iron for a sale in seconds.

  2. 2

    Clothing on the right

The second unit holds folded sportswear in tubs by size, with retro pieces in their own tub. Keep it away from the clubs, which shed grip dust and grass.

  3. 3

    Cutting bench by the boxes

Double-wall boxes lie flat against the wall with a knife and tape gun on the bench. Long clubs need a box cut down and taped into a tube, and you do that here.

  4. 4

Scale and printer by the door

The 40 kg scale sits on the floor and the printer on a shelf. Click & Drop runs eBay and Depop labels in one batch, and parcels stack by the door for the courier.

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Reading a club before you list it

Find the model on the sole or the back of the head, the loft stamped on the hosel or sole, and the shaft maker and flex on the shaft label. Note left or right handed in the first line.

Measure the length against a club of known length if it looks long or short. A cut-down junior club listed as standard leads to a return.

02

Photos that sell clubs

Shoot the face straight on to show groove wear, then the sole, the back, the grip and the shaft label. Golfers judge use from the face and sole more than anything you write.

Lay a single club diagonally on a plain sheet in the garage with daylight from the door. Keep the same angle for every club so your shop looks consistent.

03

Sportswear for Depop

Shoot retro tops on a hanger against a plain wall or on a person, front and back plus the label. Depop buyers check the era and the fit, so measure pit to pit and length.

Wash and dry everything before it goes in a tub. Gym clothing can hold sweat smells that only come out in a wash.

04

Packing clubs and clothing

Wrap each club head in bubble wrap, pad the shaft and box it in a double-wall box cut to length. Fill gaps with paper so the club cannot slide and break through the end.

Fold clothing into a grey mailer. A tracksuit or a pile of tops weighs more than you expect, so put every parcel on the scale before printing.

05

Choosing a service for long parcels

Measure every club box before you pick a service. Royal Mail's medium parcel has length limits, so long boxes often need a courier such as DPD or Parcelforce, with Evri as the cheaper option where the box fits its size rules.

Set postage in each eBay listing by the box size, not the weight alone. A light driver in a long box can cost more than a heavy bag of clothes.

06

Buying stock that pays

Club sales and part-exchange bins sell old sets cheaply. Check each club against sold listings on your phone before you buy, and pass on sets of no-name clubs.

For sportswear, branded retro pieces earn the margin. Plain gym leggings and unbranded tops rarely cover the time to list.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Listing a club without the loft or shaft flex, so the buyers who search by spec never find it.
  • Posting a driver in a box with no padding at the end, where the head punches through in transit.
  • Quoting postage by weight alone for a long club box that needs a larger service.
  • Selling an electric trolley with its battery by standard post.
  • Storing sportswear next to muddy clubs and having to rewash it before posting.

When to upgrade

At 50 orders a week a folding table becomes a second bench, one for clubs and one for clothing, so neither waits on the other. At 100, a heavier-duty label printer copes with daily batches and fanfold stacks without jams.

Questions

How do I post a single golf club?

Wrap the head in bubble wrap, slide a tube or rolled card over the shaft and box it in a double-wall carton cut to length. Measure the finished box, because a driver in a box passes many standard length limits.

Should I sell a set or split it?

Check sold prices for the full set and for each club. Popular irons and wedges often earn more singly, while an older budget set sells better as a set for a beginner. Split only if the single clubs add up to clearly more.

Which details do golfers look for in a listing?

Brand, model, loft, shaft maker and flex, length if non-standard, grip condition and hand. Photograph the face, the sole, the back and the shaft label. Note any regrip or reshaft.

Does retro sportswear sell better on Depop or eBay?

Depop suits 1980s and 1990s tracksuits, tennis tops and training gear shot on a body. eBay suits buyers searching for a named club shirt or a specific year. Try both if a piece sits for a month.

Can I sell a golf trolley or a push trolley?

Electric trolleys carry large lithium or lead batteries, and large lithium batteries are dangerous goods that standard Royal Mail services will not take. Sell trolleys for collection, or the frame by courier without the battery.

How do I clean clubs before photographing them?

Use warm soapy water and a soft brush on the head and grooves, then dry fully. Wipe grips with a damp cloth. Leave the shaft label alone, because buyers want to read it.

Are used golf balls worth it?

Graded bags of found or lake balls sell steadily on both platforms. Sort by brand and grade, count them into bags of a dozen and post them in a padded bag or a small box.
