The kit for How to sell on Facebook Marketplace in the UK, laid out on a plain background

Before you start

Price for your postcode, list with photos that show size, take payment you can see in your own bank app and hand over bulky things without the risk.

Marketplace suits the things a parcel can't carry: a wardrobe, a cot, a mower. Buyers search by distance, so a sofa listed in Leeds reaches people in Leeds.

Collection is the default. Some accounts also get checkout with shipping; if yours does, Facebook shows the option when you list.

Kit for this

The products this guide uses, with typical UK prices.

Phone mountStarter pick

150 cm phone tripod with remote

Clothing and trainer shows need a full-body or full-shoe shot from in front. A tripod gets the phone to eye height and the remote starts recording from across the room.

Typical price£18 to £30

Packing tableBest value

180 cm folding table

Packing on the bed or the kitchen table means setting up and clearing down every session. A table that stays up lets you leave your supplies where you need them.

Typical price£30 to £55

ScalesBest value

50 kg digital parcel scale with fold-up display

A wrong weight costs you a surcharge if it's too low and overpaid postage if it's too high. This platform scale takes up to 50 kg, and its backlit display folds up 90 degrees, so you can still read it when a box hangs over the top.

Typical price£18 to £28

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Price against what sold nearby

Search your own item with the distance filter set to your area and look at what is still listed after a week. Price a little under the stale ones.

Put the price in the listing, not "offers". Buyers filter by price, and a blank one drops out of their results.

02

Photos that answer the first message

Shoot in daylight against a plain wall, then add one photo with a tape measure across the widest point. Half the questions on furniture are about whether it fits through a door.

Show every mark up close. A buyer who sees the scuff before driving over won't haggle about it on your drive.

03

Payment you can check

For collections, take cash and count it at the door, or a bank transfer you see arrive in your own banking app before the item leaves. A screenshot proves nothing.

If a buyer sends a link to "receive" money or asks for a code texted to your phone, stop replying. Facebook's help centre lists these as common Marketplace scams.

04

Collections without the worry

Give the address only once a time is agreed, keep the item by the front door or in the garage, and have someone at home with you.

For small, valuable things, meet somewhere busy in daylight, such as a supermarket car park with cameras.

Questions

Straight answers to what sellers ask about this.

Does Facebook take a cut of collection sales?

No fee applies when the buyer collects and pays you directly. Checkout sales carry a selling fee that Facebook shows before you confirm; check the Marketplace help pages for the current rate.

Can a buyer reserve an item without paying?

Only if you agree. Mark it pending once a time is booked and relist it if they don't turn up.

Is PayPal safe for a collection?

Goods and services payments for an item handed over in person carry little seller protection. Cash or a bank transfer that has landed is simpler.

Do Marketplace sales count for tax?

Selling your own unwanted things usually isn't trading. If you buy to resell, HMRC's trading rules apply; read HMRC's guidance on selling online before you scale up.

Why can't I see the shipping option?

Facebook offers checkout with shipping to some accounts and categories only. Without it, agree postage in Messenger and post it yourself.
