The kit for How to sell on Facebook Marketplace in the US, laid out on a plain background

Before you start

Local pickup or shipped checkout, prices set against your area, payment you can verify, and safe meetups for furniture, bikes and baby gear.

Marketplace in the US works two ways: local pickup, where the buyer pays you in person, and shipped orders through Facebook checkout, where the buyer pays in the app and you mail the item.

Pickup wins for anything heavy. Shipping opens small, light items to buyers across the country.

The products this guide uses, with typical US prices.

Phone mountStarter pick

60-inch phone tripod with remote

Clothing and sneaker shows need a full-body or full-shoe shot from the front. A tripod gets the phone to eye level and the remote starts recording from across the room.

Typical price$15 to $35

Packing on the bed or the kitchen table means setting up and clearing off every session. A table that stays up lets you leave your supplies where you need them.

ScalesBest value

110 lb shipping scale with fold-up display

A wrong weight gets you an adjustment charge from the carrier or postage you overpaid. This platform scale takes up to 110 lb, and its backlit display folds up 90 degrees, so you can still read it when a box hangs over the top.

Typical price$18 to $30

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Pickup or shipping

List a dresser or a crib for pickup only. Postage on a big box costs more than most buyers will pay.

Turn on shipping for items that fit a padded mailer or a small box, like shoes, games or small electronics. Facebook shows the fee before you confirm a shipped sale; check its help center for the current rate.

02

Listing photos and price

Photograph in daylight, then add one shot with a tape measure across the widest point. Buyers ask about size before anything else.

Search the same item within a few miles of you and price a little below the ones that have sat for a week.

03

Getting paid safely

For pickups, take cash or a payment app transfer you see in your own account before the buyer leaves. Ignore anyone who asks you to send a verification code from your phone or who sends a payment link by email.

For checkout orders, Facebook holds the buyer's money and releases it after delivery. Ship on time and upload tracking.

04

Meeting buyers

Many police stations have a marked exchange spot in their lot. For things too big to move, keep the item in the garage or by the door and have someone home with you.

Share your address only after a time is set.

Questions

Straight answers to what sellers ask about this.

Does Facebook charge for local pickup sales?

No. Fees apply to shipped checkout orders, and Facebook shows the amount before you confirm the sale.

Will I get a 1099-K?

Payment processors send Form 1099-K when your payments pass the IRS reporting threshold. Selling personal items at a loss usually isn't taxable income; the IRS page on Form 1099-K explains what to report.

A buyer wants to send a code to my phone. Is that okay?

No. That code lets them open an account in your name. Keep the chat in Messenger and stop replying.

What if a shipped buyer says the item never arrived?

Your tracking and the photo of the sealed box are your evidence. Facebook reviews the claim with them.

Can I sell on Marketplace without a Facebook account?

No. Marketplace runs inside Facebook, so you list and message from your profile.
