The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Items too deep for a mailer

This box suits you if your items are too deep for a bubble mailer but nowhere near a big carton: boxed figures, a pair of kids' sneakers, a squishy toy, skincare sets, a small gadget or home goods piece.

At five to fifteen packages a week on eBay, Mercari or TikTok Shop, you work through a 50 pack in one to three months. Once you ship daily, a bundle order from a packaging supplier usually cuts the cost per box.

02

Outside size, tabs and a second seal strip

Sizes such as 9 × 6 × 4 in or 8 × 6 × 2 in keep a small item snug and stay under the size where carriers start charging by volume. USPS publishes its size and dimensional weight rules, so check them before you settle on a box.

Die-cut boxes fold from one sheet and lock with tabs. Choose single-wall corrugated board, a tuck-in lid with side dust flaps, and ideally two peel-and-seal strips so the buyer can close it again for a return.

Buy two or three depths if your inventory varies. A box that fits the item closely needs less filler and resists crushing better.

03

Folding, filling and closing

Fold the base and sides along the creases, then push the end flaps in until the locks click. Do a dry fold of a new size before packing, as some boards need a firm press along the score lines.

Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap or honeycomb paper, then fill the corners with paper so nothing moves when you shake the box. Close the lid and seal it with the strip or a single band of brown tape.

Stick the shipping label flat across the lid without wrapping over an edge, and weigh the finished package before you buy postage.

04

Other boxes and mailers

Small corrugated boxes, 25 pack, are the fallback: standard boxes that you tape shut, useful for awkward shapes or when you run out. Double-wall boxes, 18 × 12 × 8 in, 15 pack, are the step up for heavy or fragile items.

Bubble mailers take flat items and keep shipping costs lower. Poly mailers suit clothing that cannot break and costs less to ship.

Box protectors for vinyl figures go inside this box when a collector expects a mint display box.

05

Packaging under a dollar per order

Spread over 50 boxes, a $25 to $45 pack adds about 50 to 90 cents to each order. With a little filler and a label, packaging stays around a dollar for most small packages.

Reuse clean boxes from your own deliveries for low-value items, and keep the new die-cut boxes for orders where presentation counts. Cover old labels and barcodes fully on any reused box.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Allow half an inch or so on each side; a box sized to the exact item leaves no room for wrap.
  • Folding against the score lines weakens the corners. Press along the creases first.
  • A heavy item can split the base of a single-wall die-cut box, so move to double-wall for weight.
  • Fit the label on one flat face. A label wrapped over an edge won't scan.
  • Cover every old label on a reused box: a visible old barcode can misroute the package.

Questions

Straight answers to what sellers ask about this.

Will these boxes keep my shipping cost down?

Small, snug boxes usually price by weight alone. Larger boxes can be charged by size, so compare the box with USPS's current dimensional weight rules.

Do die-cut boxes need tape?

The locking tabs hold the box together. Add the peel-and-seal strip or a single band of tape across the lid so it stays shut in transit.

Which depth should I buy first?

Measure the five items you sell most and pick the depth that fits most of them with a layer of wrap. Add a second size later.

Are these fine for UPS and FedEx as well as USPS?

For light items, yes. Every carrier handles packages roughly, so wrap fragile pieces well or use a double-wall box.

Can buyers reuse them for returns?

Boxes with a second peel-and-seal strip close again without tape, which makes returns easier for the buyer.

A foam insert holds the piece still in the box. The box fits inside a padded envelope, so most orders still ship as a light, thin package.

12-inch LP record mailers, 10 pack

A folding corrugated mailer holds one to three 12-inch records flat, so corners and jacket seams survive the sorting belts. Buy them if you sell vinyl every week; for a box set or a stack of records, use a box with bubble wrap.

Rigid presentation boxes, 10 pack

A rigid presentation box keeps its corners square, so a higher-value piece arrives as you packed it. Put the presentation box inside a plain shipping box.
