The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Who bubble mailers suit

Kraft bubble mailers suit you if you sell small, light items that need some cushioning: a lipstick, a phone case, a sealed booster pack, a small figure, a pair of earrings in a box. You skip folding a box and the package stays slim.

A pack of 100 lasts months if you are starting out. If you sell cards or small electronics on eBay, Mercari or Whatnot, you can use them as your main mailer.

02

#0 and the sizes either side

Bubble mailers come in numbered sizes from #000 up to #7. The #0 is a common small size, roughly 6 × 10 inches inside, which fits a phone case, a few cosmetics or a toploaded card. Makers vary by a fraction of an inch, so read the inside size on the listing.

The standard build is a kraft paper outer with a bubble lining and a peel-and-seal strip. White and poly outers exist too; kraft hides scuffs and takes a thermal label well.

Allow for the bubble lining when you measure thickness. A filled mailer that bulges or goes rigid no longer counts as a flat envelope with USPS, so ship it as a package with USPS Ground Advantage and price it from the weight.

03

Bagging, sleeving and sealing

Put small loose items in a zip bag first so nothing escapes through a corner, then slide the bag in. Press the strip down firmly along its length.

For cards, add a stiffener, or sleeve the card and slot it in a toploader: padding stops knocks but can't stop a bend. For jewelry, put the piece in a small jewelry box, then into the mailer.

Stand a box of mailers beside the printer so you can stick each label straight onto the next one.

05

Cents per mailer

A pack of 100 runs $16 to $28, so 16 to 28 cents a mailer. For small items it replaces a box, tape and void fill, so the saving per order adds up.

Buy your most-used size in bulk and keep a few of the next size up. Overstuffing a too-small mailer bursts the seam, and a slightly bigger one costs a cent or two more.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Step up a size before the mailer bulges. Overfilling bursts the seal or the side seam.
  • Padding alone lets a card bend; add a toploader or a cardboard stiffener.
  • A packed bubble mailer ships as a package, not a letter. Buy a package label from USPS or Pirate Ship instead of sticking stamps on it.
  • Loose small parts slip through a split corner, so bag them first.
  • Above a pound or so of dense item, the paper tears. Use a box.

Questions

Straight answers to what sellers ask about this.

What fits in a #0 bubble mailer?

A phone case, a few cosmetics, a toploaded card or a boxed small figure. Confirm the inside size on the listing before you buy.

Can I ship trading cards in a bubble mailer?

Yes, with a toploader or stiffener inside. The padding alone won't stop a bend.

Can I put stamps on a bubble mailer?

A packed bubble mailer is usually too thick and rigid for letter rates. Buy a package label online and ship it with USPS Ground Advantage.

Are kraft bubble mailers recyclable?

Mixed paper and bubble lining usually goes in the trash unless the maker offers an all-paper version. The listing says which you have.

Which size should I buy first?

A #0 covers most small items. Add the next size up once you list larger pieces.

Gray poly mailers, 10 × 13 in, 100 pack

Self-seal poly mailers add almost no weight, so one garment usually ships at the lightest Ground Advantage tier. The film is opaque gray, so it hides the contents, and a 4 × 6 label sits flat on it.
