WhatnotTikTok ShopeBayVintedDepopEtsyVestiaire Collective

Clips to a phone mount or sits on the desk to lift the shadow side of a card or a ring. It costs little as a first light and stays useful as fill once you add panels.

Good for

  • A first light under $30
  • Filling shadows on close-ups

Not for

  • Lighting a whole show on its own

Our approved alternative for the same job: 18-inch ring light with stand

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Who a pocket LED light suits

Buy one as your first light to lift the shadow side of a card, a ring or a watch face. Once you add bigger panels, keep it as the small fill light beside them.

If you sell jewelry, coins or crystals, hold it close to the item to bring out sparkle and edge detail. It works for a Whatnot show, eBay listing photos or a Poshmark closet, at any order volume.

02

Battery, color temperature and CRI

Choose a built-in rechargeable battery with USB-C charging, adjustable brightness and adjustable color temperature, often around 2,500 to 6,500 K. Look for a CRI of 95 or higher so gold keeps its true color on camera.

A cold-shoe mount and a 1/4-inch thread let you fix it to a phone rig, a tripod or a desk arm. A magnetic back helps on steel shelving.

03

Placing it opposite your main light

Fix it to the phone mount or a mini tripod a few inches from the item, on the side opposite your main light. Dim it until shadows soften but still show: jewelry needs some shadow to look three-dimensional.

For photos in a 16-inch light box, point it through the side panel to add a highlight. Charge it after each show so it's ready next time.

05

Battery and running cost

At $15 to $30, the light is a small cost spread across your orders. Battery life varies by model and brightness, so check the listing and test a full show at your usual setting.

Plug it in during long shows through its USB-C port. If the battery fades fast after a year or two, replace the light.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • One pocket light can't carry a whole live show. Add a main light and keep this one as fill.
  • On the same side as the main light, it leaves the shadows hard. Move it to the opposite side to soften them.
  • At full brightness the light flattens the sparkle on a ring, so dim it until highlights show.
  • Set it to the same color temperature as your main light so the two don't clash on camera.
  • A battery that dies mid-show takes your fill light with it, so charge it after every show.

Questions

Straight answers to what sellers ask about this.

Is a pocket light enough for Whatnot?

As a first light for a short show, it helps. For regular shows, add side panels and keep this as fill.

Does it fit on a phone tripod?

Most have a cold-shoe foot or a 1/4-inch thread. Check that your tripod has a matching mount.

Can I use it for jewelry photos?

Yes. Placed low and to the side, it brings out facets and metal edges.

How long does the battery last?

That depends on the model and brightness. Test it at your usual setting before a long show.

Two softbox lights with stands

Softboxes spread light over a big area, so a whole outfit or a rack of inventory gets even light with soft shadows. They take more floor space than panels and suit a spare room better than a desk.

Elgato Key Light Air MK.2

A mid-size desk panel with app control, sized to sit on either side of a rip camera without crowding a narrow desk. Two of them light a card mat from both sides at about 45 degrees, which keeps a bright reflection off holo foil. Pick the full-size panel instead if it's your only light and you also want your face lit across a wide table.
