Why this setup

You sell boxed toys and collectibles, such as LEGO sets, Disney pieces, die-cast cars and vinyl figures, in Whatnot shows and on eBay, posting 10 to 50 parcels a week from a spare room.

Collectors buy the box as much as the toy. A crushed corner or a scuffed window can halve what a sealed set or a boxed figure is worth, so this setup puts as much money into protectors and cardboard as into the camera.

Live, you show each piece on a tripod-mounted phone under two panels, turning the box so viewers see every corner. Off camera, you find stock by shelf code and pack each piece box-in-box so it reaches the buyer in the condition it left you.

The kit

Every item, why it’s here and what it typically costs in the UK.

Phone mountStarter pick

150 cm phone tripod with remote

Clothing and trainer shows need a full-body or full-shoe shot from in front. A tripod gets the phone to eye height and the remote starts recording from across the room.

LightingBest value

Two LED video panels with stands

Holo cards, foiled boxes and glossy packaging reflect a ring light straight back at the camera. With two panels angled in from each side, the glare falls outside the frame.

TapeBest value

Tape dispenser gun

Once you ship more than a handful of boxes a week, a tape gun saves minutes on every session and stops tape ends sticking to themselves.

Label printerStarter pick

Phomemo thermal label printer

Costs less than most thermal printers and fits on a shelf. It prints the same 100 x 150 mm labels, so your label stock carries over if you upgrade later.

How to lay it out

Where everything goes, so each order moves one way through the room.

  1. 1

    Display shelf as the backdrop

Put the steel shelving behind you in frame, stocked with tonight’s lots facing out. Viewers see what’s coming, and you reach back for the next piece without leaving the shot.

  2. 2

Tripod and panels at the table

Set the phone on the tripod at table height, a little above the items, with a panel either side. Turn boxes slowly under the light so window plastic shows no glare.

  3. 3

    Protector station beside you

Keep a stack of box protectors on the table. A figure that sells goes into its protector on camera, which shows buyers the care before the parcel arrives.

  4. 4

Box and wrap area by the wall

Store flat-packed single and double-wall boxes, bubble wrap and paper fill against the wall with the scale and printer, and pack there after the show.

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Setting up a show

Pick the lots an hour before and load them onto the display shelf in selling order. Group by theme, for example construction sets first, then figures, then cars, so viewers know what comes next.

Check each box under the panels before you go live, and note any crease or sun fade on a card so you mention it on camera.

02

Presenting boxes on camera

Hold each box square to the lens, then rotate it to show all four corners, the top and the seals. Bidders on sealed items look for original tape.

For figures, tilt the window slightly away from the panels to cut reflections. Put a sold piece into a protector and onto a lower shelf marked for packing.

04

Coded shelving for back stock

Number each shelf and give each a short code, then write the code in your eBay listing and on your show notes. Heavy sets go on the bottom shelves, small figures at eye level.

Leave one shelf empty as the outbox for sold items. After a show, pack everything on it before you add anything new.

05

Weighing and postage

Weigh each finished parcel on the parcel scale and measure it. Big set boxes can go over a courier’s size bands even when they’re light, so check the size limits for the service you use.

Print the label on the thermal printer and stick it on the largest flat side. Keep the tracking number against the order in case a buyer reports damage.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Posting a boxed collectible in a single thin box leaves the box corners to take the knocks, so double box anything sealed or graded by collectors.
  • Packing toys loose in a box with no fill lets them slide and dent the packaging, so fill the gaps until nothing moves when you shake it.
  • Hiding box damage until after the sale leads to returns, so show every corner and crease on camera before bidding.
  • Stacking heavy set boxes on top of figure boxes crushes the windows, so keep heavy stock on the bottom shelves.
  • Guessing parcel size from weight alone leads to courier surcharges, so measure big set boxes before you buy the label.

When to upgrade

At about 40 orders a week, move to the MUNBYN printer for faster batches. At 50, a folding table gives boxing its own bench. At 70, sort back stock into clear tubs by theme or scale so the display shelf only holds the next show.

  • 40+ MUNBYN thermal label printer
  • 50+ 180 cm folding table
  • 70+ Clear stackable 32 L tubs

Questions

How do I post a sealed construction set without damaging the box?

Wrap the set box in bubble wrap, put it in a carton with a few centimetres of space all round, fill the gaps with paper and tape every seam. For valuable sets, put that carton inside a second box.

When should I double box a toy?

Double box anything where the packaging is part of the value, such as sealed sets, boxed figures and collector die-cast. Loose or played-with toys go in a single box with wrap.

Do vinyl figures need box protectors?

Protectors keep the window box square and the corners sharp, both in storage and in the post. Collectors often keep them on, so they count as part of what the buyer receives.

How do I pack small die-cast cars?

Keep the card or box intact, wrap it in a layer of bubble wrap and post it in a small box rather than an envelope. A padded bag lets the blister card crush.

Should I show toys loose or boxed in a Whatnot show?

Show boxed items sealed and turn them for every side. For loose items, put the piece on the table under the panels and point out any wear or missing parts before bidding.

How do I keep toy stock organised?

Give each shelf a code and put that code in the listing or show notes. Sort by line and theme, and you find any eBay or show sale in seconds.

Can I reuse boxes from deliveries?

Reuse sound, clean boxes for the inner layer if they fit. Use new double-wall boxes for the outer layer on valuable pieces, where a soft or torn carton puts the item at risk.
