Why this setup
You sell sealed snacks, sweets and drinks bought from UK importers and wholesalers as mixed boxes, ship 50 to 150 orders a week on TikTok Shop and eBay, and store everything in a spare room.
You register with your council as a food business at least 28 days before your first sale, and TikTok Shop treats food as an invite-only category with its own approval step. Allow a month of setup before the first box goes out.
The room holds two shelving units with stock in date order, tubs for loose sweets still in their sealed packs, a packing table, and a pair of LED panels so crisp packets and drinks cans show their colours in TikTok videos.
The kit
Every item, why it’s here and what it typically costs in the UK.
MUNBYN thermal label printer
It takes the standard 100 x 150 mm labels that eBay, Vinted and Whatnot all generate, and generic labels work, so the running cost stays low.
Typical price£55 to £85
See on Amazon30 kg digital postal scale
Covers the parcels most home sellers ship, up to 30 kg. Choose it when the 40 kg scale is out of stock.
Typical price£12 to £20

Floor space runs out before height does. Number the shelves and each item gets an address you can pick from.
Typical price£80 to £140

Label each tub with a shelf code and record the code against the listing. A sale then tells you which tub to open.
Typical price£60 to £90

Packing on the bed or the kitchen table means setting up and clearing down every session. A table that stays up lets you leave your supplies where you need them.
Typical price£40 to £65

Once you ship more than a handful of boxes a week, a tape gun saves minutes on every session and stops tape ends sticking to themselves.

How to lay it out
Where everything goes, so each order moves one way through the room.
- 1
Shelving away from the radiator
Put both units on the coolest wall, out of direct sun. Chocolate goes on the lowest shelf where the room is coolest, and drinks go on the bottom of the other unit for weight.
- 2
Date order on every shelf
Put the oldest best before dates at the front and new deliveries behind. A marker pen date on the outer case means you check one number, not every packet.
- 3
Packing table by the door
Make up boxes in the morning, keep void fill in a bin under the table and print labels at the end.
- 4
Filming spot by the window
Leave the tripod and LED panels set up on a small clear patch of the table, so you can film a new box in five minutes.
The guide
Each step in the order you'll need it.
The month before the first sale
Register with your council online and note the date. While you wait, open the TikTok Shop food application, set up the eBay listings as drafts and line up two UK importers that send compliant labels.
Expect a call or visit from the council's environmental health team. Show them where stock lives, how you rotate dates and how you keep pets out of the room.
Buying stock that passes the label test
Each sealed product you sell needs English labelling: name, ingredients with the 14 allergens emphasised, weight, best before or use by date and a UK or EU business address. Imported packs often carry a sticker over the original text.
Reject any case without the sticker, and keep the importer's invoice for every batch so you can trace a product if there is a recall.
Building a mixed box
Pick a theme per box, such as Japanese crisps or American candy, and list the exact contents in the description. Buyers with allergies read every word, so name each product rather than writing "assorted".
Pack heavy cans at the bottom, crisps on top and paper fill around them. If you pack the box upside down, the crisps arrive crushed and you get a refund request.

Dates, rotation and short-dated stock
Check every shelf on Monday. Move anything within six weeks of its best before date into a clearance box at a lower price, with the date in the title.
You can still sell food past its best before date if it is safe, but state the date in the listing. Bin anything past a use by date.
Shipping fast enough
Use a 48-hour tracked service or faster, so boxes don't sit in a warm van over a weekend. TikTok Shop sets its own dispatch deadlines, so print and pack daily.
On eBay, buy labels through Click & Drop or eBay's own postage and compare Royal Mail with couriers by weight. Evri suits light, sturdy boxes, but check its rules on food first.

Common mistakes
Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.
- Buying a pallet of imported sweets before your council registration and TikTok Shop approval are in place.
- Writing "assorted snacks" instead of naming each product, which leaves buyers with allergies unable to check what they're getting.
- Storing chocolate on a top shelf near a sunny window and sending out bloomed bars.
- Losing track of dates and finding a shelf of stock past its best before the week a big order comes in.
- Selling unlabelled sweets from split multipacks as single items.
When to upgrade
At around 100 orders a week, buy a 40 kg scale so you can weigh drinks multipacks and wholesale cases as they arrive. Past 120, a thermal label printer lets you print a day's labels in one batch.
- 100+ 40 kg digital parcel scale

Questions
Do I need to register before selling snacks from home?
Yes. A food business in England, Wales or Northern Ireland registers with its local council, and the Food Standards Agency asks for this at least 28 days before trading. It is free. Scotland registers through its own local authority process.
Can I sell food on TikTok Shop straight away?
No. Food and drink is an invite-only category on TikTok Shop UK, and the onboarding asks for your council registration and other documents. Check the current requirements in TikTok Shop's Seller University before you buy stock.
Can I split a multipack and sell the bars singly?
Not if the single bars lack the full labelling required for individual sale, such as ingredients and allergens in English. Sell sealed packs as they came, or buy single-sale stock from your wholesaler.
Are American sweets legal to sell in the UK?
Many are, but some contain additives or colours that aren't permitted here, and Trading Standards have seized stock. Buy from importers that supply UK-compliant labelling, and check each line before listing.
How do I stop chocolate melting in the post?
Avoid sending chocolate in heatwaves, or warn buyers and use a faster tracked service. Pack it away from the box walls with paper fill, so it sits further from the heat of a hot van.
Do I need a food hygiene certificate?
For sealed, prepacked products it is not a legal requirement, but a Level 2 food hygiene course is cheap and shows the council you know the basics. TikTok Shop may ask for food safety documents during onboarding.
