Why this setup
You sew dog bandanas, fabric collars and matching leads, sell 10 to 40 orders a week on Etsy, clear seconds and pre-loved pet kit on Vinted, and work from a corner of the living room.
Pet accessories travel well: a bandana weighs less than a letter of paperwork and a collar fits in a padded envelope. The kit here is small on purpose, with a compact label printer, a light tent for fabric close-ups and paper mailers that suit Etsy buyers who notice plastic.
Sizing takes the most care. A buyer measuring a whippet and a buyer measuring a pug need different numbers, so every listing gives neck sizes in centimetres and every parcel carries a sizing card.
The kit
Every item, why it’s here and what it typically costs in the UK.
Phomemo thermal label printer
Costs less than most thermal printers and fits on a shelf. It prints the same 100 x 150 mm labels, so your label stock carries over if you upgrade later.
Typical price£70 to £110
See on Amazon30 kg digital postal scale
Covers the parcels most home sellers ship, up to 30 kg. Choose it when the 40 kg scale is out of stock.
Typical price£12 to £20
See on Amazon40 cm photo light box
Consistent white-background photos make your listings look like a shop. The box folds flat when you need the desk back.
Typical price£25 to £40

Label each tub with a shelf code and record the code against the listing. A sale then tells you which tub to open.
Typical price£60 to £90

Imports orders from eBay, Etsy and other marketplaces, buys postage and prints to a thermal printer. Use it for the orders where you choose the courier; the platform labels its own.

How to lay it out
Where everything goes, so each order moves one way through the room.
- 1
Sewing table against the wall
Set the machine on the left and the cutting mat in the middle, and fold the light tent flat behind it when you aren’t shooting.
- 2
Two tubs by fabric
One tub holds finished stock sorted by size in labelled bags. The other holds hardware such as buckles, D-rings and clips.
- 3
Packing tray on the windowsill
Keep mailers, tissue, stickers and the small printer in a shallow tray you can lift onto the table and put back.
- 4
Vinted box in the cupboard
Keep seconds, sample pieces and pre-loved items your own dog outgrew here, apart from Etsy stock.
The guide
Each step in the order you'll need it.
Taking measurements in listings
Give the neck range for collars, the full tie length for bandanas and the strap width. Add a line for common breeds per size, checked against your own test dogs.
Pin a size chart photo as the second image in every Etsy listing. Buyers on a phone often scroll the photos and skip the text.
Photographing fabric
Use the light tent for flat shots of the print, then one photo on a dog. A photo of a neighbour's dog wearing the collar sells better than a flat lay.
Shoot outdoors on an overcast day for lifestyle photos. Bright sun bleaches pastel prints and hard shadows hide the stitching.

Batching custom orders
Collect personalised orders until Wednesday, cut all the fabric on Thursday and sew on Friday. Machine time drops by half when you change thread colour once per batch.
Put the order number on a scrap of tape on each cut piece, so you don't swap names or sizes.
Packing light and neat
Fold the bandana around a sizing card, wrap in a sheet of tissue, seal with one sticker and slide it into a paper mailer. Collars with metal buckles go in a padded envelope so the buckle doesn't wear a hole.
Most single orders fit Royal Mail's letter or large letter bands. Measure your packed parcel against Royal Mail's current size guide before you set postage.
Keeping Etsy and Vinted apart
Etsy is your made-to-order shop and Vinted is your clearance rail. Use different photos and prices so the two don't compete for the same buyer.
Vinted prints the label from its app, so its parcels skip Click & Drop. Etsy orders import into Click & Drop and print in one batch.

Common mistakes
Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.
- Listing sizes as small, medium and large without centimetres, and spending the week answering messages.
- Using plastic side-release buckles from an unknown seller on collars for big, strong dogs.
- Slipping a bag of homemade treats into an order as a freebie before registering as a feed business.
- Posting a metal-buckled collar in a thin paper mailer that tears in the sorting office.
- Mixing seconds into Etsy stock and sending a flawed piece to a full-price buyer.
When to upgrade
At about 25 orders a week, a shelving unit takes the finished stock out of the tubs. Past 35, a printer that takes wider fanfold labels saves reloading rolls during custom order weeks.
- 25+ 5-tier steel shelving
- 35+ MUNBYN thermal label printer
Questions
Do dog collars need a safety mark?
Pet products aren't covered by the children's toy rules, but general product safety law applies. Use metal or tested plastic buckles, stitch every stress point twice and check every clip before you post it.
Can I add homemade dog treats to my bandana orders?
Only once you register with your council's trading standards team as a feed business. Pet treats are animal feed in law, with labelling rules of their own, and animal-origin ingredients can bring APHA registration too. Leave them out until that is done.
Do dogs need an ID tag on their collar?
In England, Wales and Scotland the Control of Dogs Order requires a dog in a public place to wear a collar with the owner's name and address. Offering engraved tags as an add-on suits that, but use a supplier for the engraving.
How do I size bandanas for every breed?
Sell by neck size in centimetres, not small, medium and large. Most handmade sellers offer four or five bands with a breed example for each, and a custom option for big dogs.
Is Vinted a good place for pet accessories?
For pre-loved kit and seconds, yes. Buyers there want a bargain, so it clears stock that doesn't meet your Etsy standard without discounting your main shop.
Can I make walking gear beyond collars?
Body-worn walking gear takes strain across the chest and shoulders, so test each design with real dogs and use rated webbing and hardware. Many makers start with collars and bandanas and add bigger pieces once a design is proven.
