The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Choosing a pet line to start with

Dog accessories have the widest audience, then cats. Handmade collars, bandanas and personalised tags do well on Etsy, while bundles of grooming kit and toys suit Whatnot and TikTok Shop.

Pick one animal and build depth in sizes before adding more. A full run of dog harness sizes in one style beats a single size in ten styles.

02

Treats, food and the feed rules

Pet food and treats count as animal feed. Register as a feed business with your local council before your first sale, and keep a record of every ingredient batch you buy.

Reselling sealed, branded treats is simpler than baking your own. Check the dates on stock and rotate it so the oldest sells first.

03

Measuring and photographing pet products

Lay each collar or dog harness flat beside a tape measure and photograph it at full stretch and fully closed. Photograph clips and buckles close up, since buyers worry about a dog slipping free.

A photo of the item on a real animal sells better than a flat lay. Use your own pet or a friend's, with a calm background.

04

Selling pet supplies live

Live shows suit bundles and mystery bags. Squeeze each toy for the microphone and stretch leads on camera so buyers see the length.

Keep a sizing card on the desk with neck ranges for each dog harness size and read from it when buyers ask. It saves guessing on air and cuts returns.

05

Packing light, soft and bulky orders

Collars, leads, bandanas and soft toys go in a mailing bag, folded flat. Ceramic bowls need bubble wrap and a box, with paper filling every gap.

Compress a bed by rolling it and strapping it with tape before boxing it. Measure the packed size, since a bed often fits a medium parcel band once rolled.

06

Postage, returns and repeat buyers

Most accessory orders weigh well under a kilo and fit a small parcel band. Weigh treat bundles each time, as tins and jars push the weight up fast.

Pet owners buy again when the animal grows or a toy gets chewed. Add a card with your shop name to each parcel and keep the same sizes in stock.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Selling homemade treats without registering as a feed business breaks the rules on animal feed, so contact the council first.
  • Listing dog harnesses as small, medium or large with no measurements leads to returns, so give neck and chest ranges in centimetres.
  • Listing flea or worming products you aren't authorised to sell gets listings removed, so leave medicines to vets and pharmacies.
  • Posting a ceramic bowl in a mailing bag ends in shards, so wrap it and box it.
  • Leaving squeaky toys with loose parts in a bundle puts animals at risk, so check every toy before it goes in.

Selling pet supplies

Pet buyers shop by animal and by size. A dog harness listing that gives chest and neck measurements in centimetres sells, and one that says "medium" gets questions and returns.

Accessories like collars, leads, bowls, toys and handmade bandanas are the simplest place to start. Treats and food bring council registration, and medicines are off limits for a home seller.

Most pet orders are soft and light, so a mailing bag covers them. Beds and bulk bags of treats go in a box and need weighing before you list.

Questions

Can I sell homemade dog treats?

Yes, but pet food is animal feed in law, so you register with your local council as a feed business before you sell. Labels need ingredients and a feeding guide. Ask the council's trading standards team which rules apply to your recipes.

Can I sell flea and worming treatments?

Prescription treatments can't be resold, and many shop treatments can only be supplied by a vet, pharmacist or registered animal medicines adviser. Leave veterinary medicines to pharmacies and vets, and check your platform's restricted items list before listing anything for parasites.

Can I sell live animals on these platforms?

Whatnot, eBay, Vinted, Depop, Etsy and TikTok Shop ban or tightly limit live animal sales. Selling pets as a business also needs a licence from your council.

Do dog toys need a UKCA mark?

Pet toys aren't covered by the toy safety rules for children, but they still have to be safe under general product safety law. Avoid small parts that snap off and squeakers that come loose.

How do I describe sizes for collars and dog harnesses?

Give the adjustable range in centimetres for neck and chest, plus the width of the strap. Add a breed example such as "fits most adult cocker spaniels" to help buyers picture it.

Can I sell used pet beds and carriers?

Yes. Wash covers, photograph any wear, and say whether the item has been in a home with smokers or other animals. Buyers with allergic pets ask.
