The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Who needs a thousand penny sleeves

You need these if you sell single trading cards: Pokémon, sports, Magic or One Piece singles on Whatnot, eBay or Vinted. A box of 1,000 lasts a casual seller months and a busy breaker a few weeks.

Live breakers get through sleeves fastest, because each hit pulled on camera goes straight into one. If you sell sealed product or bulk lots, you may need far fewer, and a 100 pack covers your start.

02

Sleeve specs to check before you order

Standard cards measure 2.5 by 3.5 inches (63.5 by 88.9 mm), so buy sleeves sized for them. Japanese-size and Yu-Gi-Oh cards are smaller and slide around in a standard sleeve; order a small-size pack if you sell those.

Pick polypropylene labelled acid free and PVC free. Soft PVC can cloud and stick to a card surface over time, and graders and collectors know it.

Match the sleeve thickness rating to your cards. Standard sleeves take a card up to about 35pt, which covers nearly all base cards; thick patch and relic cards need a wider sleeve.

03

Sleeving cards in your packing routine

Slide the card in top first, with the opening at the top, so the corners do not catch on the sleeve edge. Keep a stack of open sleeves fanned out on your mat during a show so you can sleeve a hit one handed.

The sleeve then goes into a 35pt toploader, opening down, and the toploader into a team bag. Card buyers on Whatnot and eBay expect that three-layer stack when the parcel lands.

04

Toploaders, team bags and storage boxes

Toploaders, 35pt toploaders, 100 pack, are the rigid layer that comes after the sleeve. A sleeve stops scratches and leaves the card free to bend, so use both for any card worth more than a couple of pounds.

Resealable team bags, 100 pack, are the fallback if sleeves run out: a team bag over a toploader still keeps dust and damp away, though the card surface touches hard plastic directly.

For bulk commons sold by the hundred, the 3,200-count card storage boxes do the job better than sleeving each card one at a time.

05

Under a penny a card, and dust-free storage

At £6 to £10 for 1,000, each sleeve costs under a penny, so sleeving even a 50p card adds almost nothing to the order. Make it a habit for each single you list.

Keep the open pack in a closed drawer or a clear tub. Dust that settles inside an open sleeve ends up on the card face, and buyers see it under a ring light.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Slide each card in top first, flat on the mat. Bottom first, the corners bend against the sleeve lip.
  • Japanese and Yu-Gi-Oh cards shift and scuff in standard sleeves; they need small-size sleeves.
  • Soft PVC sleeves can leave a haze on the card over time. Confirm the listing says polypropylene and acid free.
  • A sleeved card posted without a toploader can bend in the sorting machines, so add one for anything worth more than pocket change.
  • Keep the pack in a drawer or tub between shows; sleeves left open on the desk collect dust inside.

Questions

Do penny sleeves fit Pokémon cards?

English Pokémon cards are standard size, 63.5 by 88.9 mm, the size these sleeves are made for. Japanese Pokémon cards are slightly smaller and fit better in small-size sleeves.

Should the sleeve go in the toploader opening up or down?

Opening down. The card then stays in the sleeve when the buyer tips the toploader.

Are penny sleeves the same as deck protector sleeves?

No. Deck sleeves are thicker, often coloured on the back, and made for shuffling in play. Penny sleeves are thin and clear, made to sit inside a toploader.

Do I need to sleeve bulk commons?

Usually not. Bulk lots go in card storage boxes or team bags by the stack. Sleeve any card you list on its own.

Can I reuse sleeves from cards I bought?

You can if they are clean and unsplit, though a fresh sleeve costs under a penny. A cloudy or creased sleeve makes the card look worse in your photos.
