Evri’s ParcelShops and courier collections against Royal Mail’s post offices, postboxes and Large Letters: tracking, drop-off and compensation compared.

The short answer

Use Royal Mail for cards, jewellery and anything flat enough to go as a Large Letter. Royal Mail is the more reliable first choice, and scored higher in Citizens Advice’s 2025 parcel league table. Use Evri when its tracked parcels and a nearby corner shop drop-off suit you, and check both sites for the price on the day.

Choose Evri if

  • You post soft parcels like clothing and want tracking as standard.
  • An Evri ParcelShop is closer to you than a post office.
  • You want a courier to collect from your door on a set day.
  • Your buyer picked Evri at checkout on Vinted or another marketplace.

Choose Royal Mail if

  • You post trading cards or other flat items as Large Letters.
  • You send jewellery or coins that need Special Delivery.
  • You want to drop small items in a postbox.
  • You buy labels through Click & Drop or eBay’s label tool.

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Letters versus parcels

Card and small jewellery sellers use Royal Mail for its Large Letter band. A board-backed mailer under 25 mm thick goes through a postbox slot.

Evri’s network is built for parcels, and a T-shirt in a mailing bag travels fine with either.

02

Tracking and claims

Evri includes tracking and cover up to £20 or the item’s value on its sending service. Royal Mail 1st and 2nd Class carry the same £20 cover but no tracking; Tracked 48 adds both a scan trail and cover up to £75.

Keep your proof of postage either way. Evri ParcelShops send it as a digital receipt by email, and Royal Mail’s claim deadlines run from the posting date.

03

Dropping parcels off

Evri says its ParcelShops sit in more than 9,000 local businesses across the UK. Royal Mail has post office counters, customer service points and postboxes.

Walk both routes once. On a busy week, use the nearer drop-off with longer hours.

04

Marketplace labels

Vinted, eBay and Whatnot each offer their own carrier choices at checkout or in the label tool. Often the buyer or the platform picks the carrier, so you follow the label.

Where you choose, compare the price on each carrier’s site on the day you post.

Questions

Is Evri cheaper than Royal Mail?

It depends on size, weight and service. Compare current prices on evri.com and royalmail.com for your parcel.

Is Royal Mail more reliable than Evri?

Citizens Advice’s 2025 parcel league table scored Royal Mail 3.25 out of 5 and Evri 2.25. Both lose and delay some parcels, so use tracking on anything valuable and keep proof of postage.

Does Evri do Large Letters?

Evri’s services are aimed at parcels. For flat items, Royal Mail’s Large Letter is the usual choice.

How much compensation does Evri pay?

Evri includes cover up to £20 or the item’s value, whichever is lower. Read its terms before sending anything valuable.

Can Royal Mail collect parcels from my house?

Royal Mail offers collection when you buy Tracked 24 or Tracked 48 postage online, for a small fee per item.

Which is better for eBay sellers?

Royal Mail for cards and small flat items, as eBay’s label tool and Click & Drop support it. Evri suits soft parcels where a ParcelShop is handy.
