Typical price

WhatnotTikTok ShopeBayVinted

A mirrorless camera with an APS-C sensor and swappable lenses, so a card on the mat sits sharp against a soft background. Turn off the on-screen info and its micro-HDMI port sends a clean picture to a capture stick for your streaming software. Budget extra for a lens, a micro-HDMI cable and a dummy battery for long shows; below about 80 orders a week a 4K webcam is the saner buy.

Good for

  • Card shows at 80+ orders a week
  • Sellers who also film listing videos

Not for

  • First shows or tight budgets
  • You have no capture card or computer

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Who should buy a mirrorless camera for selling

You stream several times a week, sell items where a sharp image wins bids, and already have lighting and a computer setup that works. On the mat, this camera shows slabs, sealed boxes and jewellery sharper than most phone streams.

Below about 80 orders a week, the body, lens, capture stick and power adapter are hard to earn back. Spend on lights and a good phone mount first.

02

Sensor, ports and lens choice for a rip cam

The ZV-E10 has a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, shoots 4K at 30 frames and 1080p up to 120, and has a micro-HDMI port, USB-C, a mic input and a headphone socket. The screen flips out to the side, so you can check framing from the front.

Body only means no lens. A standard zoom of around 16 to 50 mm covers a desk; a fast prime gives more background blur and better low-light shots. If the camera sits close to cards, check the lens's minimum focus distance.

03

Running it as a live camera

Mount it on a desk arm over or in front of the mat. Run a micro-HDMI to HDMI cable into a capture stick, set the camera to hide on-screen info on HDMI, and select the stick as a webcam in your streaming software.

Run it from a dummy battery on mains power, since the internal battery drains quickly during live video. Check Sony's current spec for battery life. The camera can also stream over USB, which is easier to set up but gives lower quality than HDMI capture.

04

Webcams, Cam Link Pro or a phone macro lens

A 4K USB webcam plugs straight in and costs far less than this body, with close-up detail good enough for most mats. A dedicated face webcam is smaller and holds its settings with no menus, so use it for your own face and keep this camera on the mat.

For more than two HDMI cameras into one desktop, add a multi-input capture card instead of a stack of USB sticks. For phone-only shows, a clip-on macro lens gives close detail with no new body to learn.

05

Full kit budget before you buy

The body costs £450 to £600 as a typical band. Add a lens, a micro-HDMI cable, a capture stick, a dummy battery and a desk arm before you compare it with a webcam.

Divide the full kit cost by last month's orders to see what it costs you per order.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • The body ships with no lens, so add a standard zoom or prime to the same order.
  • Running live on the internal battery drains it mid-show; a mains dummy battery keeps it going.
  • Turn off on-screen info in the display settings, or viewers see menus over the HDMI picture.
  • A full-size HDMI cable won't fit: the ZV-E10 needs micro HDMI on the camera end.
  • If the lens can't focus, the camera is too close; check the minimum focus distance and raise the arm.

Questions

Can I stream the ZV-E10 without a capture card?

Yes. Sony supports USB streaming as a webcam. HDMI through a capture stick gives a cleaner, higher-quality picture.

Does it overheat on long shows?

Long 4K recording can warm it up. As a live camera sending HDMI at 1080p, it commonly runs for hours; keep it out of direct sun and use a dummy battery.

Which lens should I start with?

A standard zoom around 16 to 50 mm frames a desk and a mat. Add a fast prime later for more blur and low light.

Is it worth it for Vinted photos?

It is worth it if you list dozens of items a week. Otherwise a phone with good light covers Vinted listings.

Clip-on macro lens kit for phones

Your phone stays the camera and gains close focus for centring, surface scratches, hallmarks and fabric labels. Before a show, make sure the clip fits over your phone case and camera bump, and add light, because macro shots lose brightness.

1080p USB webcam

Clip it to a monitor or a small tripod and your computer becomes the streaming device, which frees your phone for chat and orders. It suits a desk show where you sit a fixed distance from the camera.

Elgato Facecam MK.2

A desk webcam with manual exposure you set once, so the picture holds steady when a foil card passes the lens. It runs at 1080p and 60 frames a second, which keeps a fast pack rip smooth. Use it as the face camera beside an overhead phone or a mirrorless camera; for detail shots of corners and centring, a 4K webcam crops tighter.

4K USB webcam

The extra resolution lets streaming software crop tight on a card corner or a stitch and keep the picture sharp. It earns its price once you run regular shows from a computer with a capture setup; for phone-only streaming it adds nothing.
