A foam insert holds the piece still in the box. The box fits in a padded envelope, so most orders still go as a Large Letter.

Our approved alternative for the same job: Rigid presentation boxes, 10 pack

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

01

Etsy makers, vintage pieces and single coins

Small foam-lined boxes suit you if you make jewellery for Etsy or sell vintage pieces on eBay and Vinted. They also hold a single coin, as long as the coin sits in a capsule first. Your buyer can hand it over as a gift without repacking.

A 50 pack covers a small-batch maker for several weeks. If you ship more than a few orders a day, buy in hundreds and keep two sizes.

02

Inserts, lids and outer depth

Pick kraft or plain card boxes with a foam insert. Rings sit in a slit in the foam; earrings fit through holes in a card insert; chains and bracelets lie flat. Note the outer dimensions, since a box that is too deep can push a padded envelope beyond the slimmest postage size.

Lids either lift off or slide. Lift-off lids look more like a shop box, while slide-out boxes stay closed better in transit. Plain kraft boxes take a sticker or a stamp if you want your shop name on them.

03

Packing jewellery

Clean the piece, place it in the foam, and wrap chains round a small card so they cannot tangle. Close the box and seal it with a sticker.

Put the box in a D/1 padded envelope or a small box. Measure the thickness of the packed envelope before you choose postage, and compare it with the Royal Mail size table for that format.

Bag loose findings or a pair of studs in a grip seal bag first, so a stud can't fall out of the box.

05

16p to 28p for a gift-ready box

Fifty boxes at £8 to £14 works out at 16p to 28p apiece.

For a gift, a clean box sealed with a sticker saves your buyer finding wrap.

Common mistakes

Each one costs you money or reviews, and each has a fix.

  • Seat the ring in the slit. Dropped in loose, it rattles around the box.
  • Wrap a chain round a card first. Posted loose, it arrives tangled.
  • Too deep a box pushes the parcel up a size, so measure the packed envelope.
  • Close each box with a sticker, or it can open in transit.
  • Foam alone can scratch a coin, so put the coin in a capsule before it goes in the box.

Guides that use it

Step-by-step help where this product does a job.

Questions

Will a jewellery box fit in a padded envelope?

Small boxes fit in a D/1 envelope. Measure the packed thickness before choosing postage.

Do I need a different insert for rings and earrings?

Rings sit in a foam slit; earrings often need a card insert with holes. The pack contents list which you get.

Kraft or white boxes?

Kraft hides scuffs and suits handmade shops. White looks cleaner for fine jewellery.

Can I print my logo on the box?

Plain kraft takes a sticker or stamp. Custom-printed boxes cost more and need larger orders.

Are these boxes good for coins?

With a capsule first, yes. The foam alone can mark a coin's surface.

12-inch LP record mailers, 10 pack

A folding board mailer holds one 12-inch record flat with stiffeners either side, so the corners and sleeve seams survive the sorting belts. Buy them if you sell vinyl every week; for a box set or a stack of records, use a small box with bubble wrap instead.

Large Letter postal boxes, 50 pack

A slim box under 25 mm deep protects a small item better than an envelope and can still go at Large Letter postage. Measure the packed box before you buy postage.
