Shelving, tubs, rails and card boxes ranked for keeping a few hundred items findable in one room, with the reason for each pick.

About this ranking

Once you have more than a hundred items, finding the one that sold takes longer than packing it. Give every item a shelf address and a sale becomes a quick pick.

These four picks cover most stock: shelving to go up the wall, clear tubs on the shelves, a rail for clothing and long boxes for cards. Shelving runs about £40 to £70, tubs £30 to £45 a set, a rail £35 to £60 and card boxes £10 to £18.

The guide

Each step in the order you'll need it.

02

Clothing on a rail

Hanging clothes stay uncreased and are ready to photograph. A rail holds 80 to 120 garments, depending on thickness.

Hang items in listing order or by size, and add a tag with the code.

03

Cards in long boxes

Bulk cards sort by set and number in long cardboard boxes with dividers. Keep valuable singles sleeved and toploaded in a separate box.

Label the box ends so you can read them on the shelf.

04

Growing past one room

When shelves fill, sell or bundle slow stock before buying more storage, since old stock takes the space new stock needs.

Add a second shelving unit beside the first and carry on the code system.

Questions

How do I organise reselling stock at home?

Shelving with numbered tubs, and a code for each item in the listing.

Clear tubs or cardboard boxes?

Clear tubs let you see inside and keep out damp. Cardboard is cheaper but crushes and hides contents.

How many clothes fit on a rail?

Around 80 to 120 garments, depending on how thick they are.

How should I store trading cards?

Bulk cards in long card boxes by set; valuable singles sleeved and toploaded.

Where do I put the stock code?

In the listing’s private notes, a stock sheet or the item’s SKU field if the platform has one.

How do I stop stock fading?

Keep tubs and rails out of direct sunlight, and cover clothing if the room is bright.
