Buyers grade the box as well as the shoes, and some eBay orders go through authentication. You need clear photos from every angle and packing that keeps the shoe box free of dents.

Two steel shelving units hold about 60 boxed pairs. You ship each pair wrapped in a double-wall outer box, with the label on the outer box only.

## The kit

- **[Phomemo thermal label printer](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/phomemo-thermal-printer)** ($70 to $110): Costs less than most thermal printers and fits on a shelf. It prints the same 4 × 6 in labels, so your label stock carries over if you upgrade later.
- **[4 × 6 in thermal labels, 250 roll](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/thermal-labels-roll)** ($8 to $14): Put a roll on a holder or inside a printer with a roll bay to save space on a crowded desk. Each label costs about 3 to 6 cents, a little more than fanfold.
- **[110 lb shipping scale with fold-up display](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/parcel-scale-50kg)** ($18 to $30): A wrong weight gets you an adjustment charge from the carrier or postage you overpaid. This platform scale takes up to 110 lb, and its backlit display folds up 90 degrees, so you can still read it when a box hangs over the top.
- **[Double-wall boxes, 18 × 12 × 8 in, 15 pack](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/double-wall-boxes)** ($45 to $70): Double-wall cardboard resists crushing better than single-wall, so your boxed sneakers arrive intact.
- **[Bubble wrap, 12 in x 175 ft](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/bubble-wrap-roll)** ($15 to $30): A long perforated roll costs several times less per foot than the small packs sold at the post office or a drugstore.
- **[Tape gun dispenser](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/tape-gun)** ($10 to $20): Once you ship more than a handful of boxes a week, a tape gun saves minutes on every session and stops tape ends sticking to themselves.
- **[Brown packing tape, 1.88 in x 72 yd, 6 rolls](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/brown-packing-tape)** ($10 to $18): 1.88 inches is the width tape guns take. Six rolls keep a shop shipping a few boxes a week going for a few months.
- **[16-inch photo light box](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/light-tent)** ($18 to $45): Matching white-background photos make your listings look like a store. The box folds flat when you need the desk back.
- ×2 **[5-tier steel shelving, 72 in](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/shelving-unit)** ($40 to $90): Floor space runs out first, so build up instead. Number the shelves and give each item an address you can pick from.
- **[60-inch phone tripod with remote](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/phone-tripod)** ($15 to $35): Clothing and sneaker shows need a full-body or full-shoe shot from the front. A tripod gets the phone to eye level and the remote starts recording from across the room.

## How to lay it out

### Shelving with bay codes

Number each shelf and stack boxes no more than five high so the bottom box doesn’t crush. Put the code in the listing.

### Photo spot with the light box

Shoot every pair from the same set of angles: both sides, sole, heel, tongue label and box label. Authenticators ask for the same angles, so one set of photos serves both.

### Packing on the floor or a table

Wrap the shoe box, drop it in the outer box, fill the gaps and tape the seams, then weigh it and print the label.

### Outer boxes ready

Keep five outer boxes made up and taped at the base.

## Photographing a pair

Put the shoes in the light box and shoot both sides, front, heel, sole, insole and size tag. Then shoot the box with the label showing.

Shoot every flaw close up, such as creasing and yellowing on the sole. Buyers compare your photos with what arrives, so clear flaw shots give you proof if a buyer disputes the condition.

## Storing 60 boxed pairs

Put the size and a stock number on a label at the box end.

Keep the shelving out of direct sunlight, which yellows soles and fades boxes. Fit blinds on the window of a small room.

## Packing a pair

Stuff the shoes with paper so the toe box holds its shape, close the shoe box, wrap it in bubble wrap and put it in a double-wall outer box with padding on all sides.

Stick the label on the outer box only. If you tape the shoe box, you tear the cardboard and lower its value to the next buyer.

Weigh the finished box. Boxed sneakers are heavy and bulky, so compare USPS Ground Advantage and UPS Ground at that size before choosing a service.

## Authentication routes

Some eBay sales go through eBay's authentication service before reaching the buyer. Check the order details: you send these pairs to the authenticator, and eBay sets the label up for that.

Pack for authentication the same way you pack for a buyer. The authenticator checks the box condition as well.

## Keeping boxes and wrap stocked

Order double-wall boxes in a size that fits a men's US 12 shoe box with room for wrap. One size covers most pairs, so you reorder a single item.

At 30 pairs a week, a roll of bubble wrap lasts a few weeks. Count boxes every weekend and reorder when ten are left.

## Growing past 30 pairs a week

Past 30 pairs a week, you run out of shelf space first. A third shelving unit fits in most small rooms; give boxes for sold pairs their own space by the door.

At 40 pairs a week, add a faster label printer and fanfold labels. Past 100 pairs in stock, a garage makes more sense than a bedroom.

## Common mistakes

- Sticking the shipping label on the shoe box, which lowers its value to a collector.
- Sending a shoe box with no outer box, so it arrives crushed at the corners.
- Stacking boxes too high on the shelf, which dents the bottom box.
- Skipping close-up flaw photos and getting a not-as-described return.
- Missing the authentication address on an eBay order and sending the pair straight to the buyer.

## When to upgrade

Add two LED panels at about 30 pairs a week for sharper close-ups of materials. At 40 a week, a faster printer with fanfold labels cuts the running cost.

- 40+ orders a week: **[MUNBYN thermal label printer](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/munbyn-thermal-printer)** ($60 to $100): It takes the standard 4 × 6 inch labels that eBay, Poshmark, Mercari and Whatnot all generate, and generic labels work, so the running cost stays low.
- 30+ orders a week: **[Two LED video panels with stands](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/led-panel-pair)** ($40 to $80): Holo cards, foil boxes and glossy packaging bounce a ring light straight back into the camera. With two panels angled in from each side, the glare lands outside the frame.

## Questions

### Can I ship sneakers in their original box?

Use an outer box. A label or a dent on the original box lowers the pair’s value to the buyer.

### How many pairs fit on one shelving unit?

Measure your biggest box and check the shelf depth and tier height on the unit’s spec sheet, then count how many boxes fit per tier before you buy.

### Do I need a light box for sneakers?

Shoot every pair in the light box so the lighting and background match across your listings. Larger pairs may need a bigger box or a plain wall with the tripod.

### How do I ship a pair going through eBay authentication?

Follow the label and address eBay gives on the order. Pack it the same way you would for a buyer, in an outer box.

### Which Mercari label suits a boxed pair?

Mercari's prepaid label is the usual pick: it covers USPS, UPS or FedEx at a fixed rate, adds tracking and keeps the sale under Mercari's shipping protection. Weigh the outer box before you choose the weight band, because a double-wall box adds more than you expect.

### Where do designer sneakers sell best?

Luxury-house pairs, from Balenciaga runners to Gucci leather sneakers, find their buyers on Vestiaire Collective. Its team checks the pair before it reaches the buyer, so expect two trips and pack for both. See its seller help for the current commission.

### Should I keep the original shoe box?

Yes. A pair without its box often sells for less.

### Where should I store sneakers to stop yellowing?

Keep them in a cool, dry room out of direct sunlight.
