# How to ship sneakers without a box

> Lost the shoebox or bought the pair loose? Stuff, wrap and pack sneakers so the toe box keeps its shape and the buyer opens a clean pair.

Updated October 8, 2026

Lots of the pairs you find at thrift stores and yard sales come with no box at all, and some buyers ask you to skip the box to save on shipping. A loose pair in a thin poly mailer arrives with a crushed toe and laces tangled around the eyelets, and suede comes out scuffed.

Take a loose pair from shelf to post office: hold the shape, protect the uppers, pick a mailer or a plain outer box, and tell the buyer in the listing that the original box is missing.

## Say it in the listing first

Put “no original box” in the title or the first line of the description, and photograph the pair without one. A buyer who expected a box has a fair complaint, even if the shoes arrive perfect.

If a buyer asks you to ship without the box, keep that request in the platform messages. That record settles any later dispute about what you agreed.

## Hold the shape from the inside

Stuff each toe with crumpled packing paper until it feels firm when you press the vamp. Paper stops a crease from forming across the toe, which is the damage buyers photograph first.

Keep the shoe trees or tissue the pair came with if you still have them. Tuck the laces inside the shoe so they cannot snag or mark the other upper.

## Separate the pair

Two shoes rubbing together for three days in transit scuff each other, worst on suede, nubuck and white leather. Put each shoe in its own dust bag, or wrap each one in tissue, to keep each sole off the other upper.

Lay them sole to sole, heel to toe. That makes a flat bundle that fits a box or mailer with fewer gaps.

## Mailer or box

A heavy poly mailer works for a beat-up pair of everyday sneakers, where a little squeeze does no harm. Wrap the bundle in one layer of bubble wrap first and press out the air before you seal.

Anything deadstock, near new or worth more than a couple of shipping labels goes in a plain single-wall box. Fill the corners with paper so the pair cannot slide, then shake it: no movement means it is ready. Depop's own packing advice points to recycled cardboard for shoes, so a clean reused box with the old labels peeled off works for a pair sold there.

## Seal, weigh and measure

Tape the box with an H pattern across the top and bottom seams using a tape gun. One strip down the middle lets a corner pop open on a sorting belt.

Weigh the sealed package and measure all three sides in inches. Without a shoebox the package is often smaller and lighter, which can drop it into a cheaper USPS Ground Advantage weight tier, so check the label price before you print.

## Keep proof before it leaves

Take two photos: the stuffed pair before wrapping, and the sealed package with the label on. Save them under the order number for a few weeks.

Most claims about loose pairs are about scuffs. A clear photo of clean uppers on the day you packed carries more weight than a written description.

## Kit for this

- **[Small corrugated boxes, 25 pack](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/single-wall-boxes)** ($12 to $25): Use these for boxed toys and beauty sets that a poly mailer would crush, when double-wall board costs more than you need.
- **[Gray poly mailers, 10 × 13 in, 100 pack](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/grey-mailing-bags)** ($8 to $15): Self-seal poly mailers add almost no weight, so one garment usually ships at the lightest Ground Advantage tier. The film is opaque gray, so it hides the contents, and a 4 × 6 label sits flat on it.
- **[Cotton dust bags, 10 pack](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/dust-bags)** ($12 to $22): Designer buyers expect a bag to arrive in a dust bag. The cotton protects the leather while it sits in the outer box.
- **[Honeycomb paper wrap roll](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/paper-void-fill)** ($20 to $35): Stretches into a cushioned mesh and goes in the paper recycling. Choose it if low-plastic packaging is part of your shop's pitch.
- **[Bubble wrap, 12 in x 175 ft](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/bubble-wrap-roll)** ($15 to $30): A long perforated roll costs several times less per foot than the small packs sold at the post office or a drugstore.
- **[Tape gun dispenser](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/tape-gun)** ($10 to $20): Once you ship more than a handful of boxes a week, a tape gun saves minutes on every session and stops tape ends sticking to themselves.
- **[66 lb digital shipping scale](https://sellersetups.com/us/product/parcel-scale-30kg)** ($20 to $35): Covers the packages most home sellers ship, up to 66 lb. Choose it when the 110 lb scale is out of stock.

## Questions

### Can I ship sneakers in a poly mailer?

Yes, for worn everyday pairs. Stuff the toes, wrap the bundle in bubble wrap and use a thick mailer. For near new or deadstock pairs, use a box.

### Is it cheaper to ship sneakers without the box?

Often, because the package is smaller and lighter. Weigh and measure it, then compare label prices on your platform or shipping app.

### What should I stuff sneakers with for shipping?

Crumpled packing paper or tissue in each toe until it holds its shape. Skip newspaper on light colors, as the ink can transfer.

### Will a buyer complain if the box is missing?

They can if the listing did not say so. State it in the title or first line and show the pair without a box in the photos.

### Can I reuse an old shoebox from another pair?

Yes as packing, inside an outer box or mailer. Say in the listing that it is not the original box so nobody expects a matching label.

### How do I keep suede from getting marked in transit?

Put each shoe in its own dust bag or tissue so no sole touches the suede, and keep the pair dry inside a sealed mailer or box.
