## Who padded envelopes suit

Kraft padded envelopes suit you if you sell small, light items that need some cushioning: a lipstick, a phone case, a sealed booster pack, a small figure, a pair of earrings in a box. You skip folding a box and the parcel stays slim.

A pack of 100 lasts months if you are starting out. If you sell cards or small electronics on eBay, Vinted or Whatnot, you can use them as your main mailer.

## D/1 and the sizes either side

Padded envelopes come in letter sizes from A/000 up to K/7. D/1 is the common small size, with an internal area of roughly 180 x 260 mm, which fits a paperback, a phone case or a few cosmetics. Makers vary by a few millimetres, so read the internal size on the listing.

The standard build is a kraft paper outer with a bubble lining and a peel-and-seal strip. White and gold outers exist too; kraft hides scuffs and takes a thermal label well.

Allow for the bubble lining when you measure thickness. A filled envelope can end up too thick for the slimmest postage formats, so measure a packed sample against the size table Royal Mail publishes before pricing postage.

## Bagging, sleeving and sealing

Put small loose items in a grip seal bag first so nothing escapes through a corner, then slide the bag in. Press the strip down firmly along its length.

For cards, add a stiffener, or sleeve the card and slot it in a toploader: padding stops knocks but cannot stop a bend. For jewellery, put the piece in a small jewellery box, then into the envelope.

Stand a box of envelopes beside the printer so you can stick each label straight onto the next envelope.

## Card mailers, poly bags or boxes

Board-backed card mailers suit flat items that must not bend, such as graded cards and prints. They protect against folding better than padding does.

Grey poly mailing bags cost less per order for clothes that need no padding. For anything boxed or fragile, step up to a small single-wall box.

## Pence per envelope

At £14 to £22 for 100, each envelope costs around 14p to 22p. For small items it replaces a box, tape and void fill, so the saving per order adds up.

Buy your most-used size in bulk and keep a few of the next size up. Overstuffing a too-small envelope bursts the seam, and a slightly bigger envelope costs a penny or two more.

## Common mistakes

- Step up a size before the envelope bulges. Overfilling bursts the seal or the side seam.
- Padding alone lets a card bend; add a toploader or board stiffener.
- A packed padded envelope can be too thick for Large Letter. Measure the parcel before you buy postage.
- Loose small parts slip through a split corner, so bag them first.
- Above a few hundred grams of dense item, the paper tears. Use a box.

## Questions

### What fits in a D/1 padded envelope?

A paperback, a phone case, a few cosmetics or a boxed small figure. Confirm the internal size on the listing before you buy.

### Can I post trading cards in a padded envelope?

Yes, with a toploader or stiffener inside. The padding alone will not stop a bend.

### Do padded envelopes fit through a letterbox?

A slim one often does. Thicker packed envelopes may need a parcel service, so measure before choosing postage.

### Are kraft padded envelopes recyclable?

Mixed paper and bubble lining usually goes in general waste unless the maker offers an all-paper version. The listing says which you have.

### Which size should I buy first?

D/1 covers most small items. Add the next size up once you list larger pieces.
