# Vestiaire Collective

> A resale marketplace for designer fashion, bags and jewellery, where buyers can pay to have your item checked by experts before it reaches them.

Vestiaire Collective sells pre-owned designer pieces to buyers across Europe, the US and beyond. A moderation team reviews each listing before it goes live, and fast-fashion brands are refused, so a £30 high-street jacket belongs on Vinted instead.

Most sales are bags, shoes, jewellery and labelled clothing worth £100 or more. You need clean, detailed photos of every logo, stamp and serial number, dust bags and boxes kept with the item, and a sturdy parcel for each sale.

## How selling on Vestiaire works

You list the item with photos, condition and a price, and the moderation team approves it or asks for changes. Buyers can make offers, and you accept, counter or decline.

After a sale you get a prepaid label and a deadline. The buyer’s choice decides whether the parcel goes to an authentication centre or to them directly.

## Photos that pass moderation

Shoot on a plain background in soft, even light: front, back, base, inside, hardware, and close-ups of the logo, heat stamp and serial or date code. Moderators and buyers look for these first.

A softbox kit gives the same light every time, and a light tent suits jewellery and small leather goods.

## Storing designer stock

Keep bags stuffed and in their dust bags, upright on a shelf away from sunlight. Hang coats and dresses on a rail with room between them so nothing creases before the photos.

Store the box, receipt, cards and spare parts with the item. Missing accessories lower the price and can fail the check.

## Packing for the check

Wrap the item in tissue inside its dust bag, then pack it in a double-wall box with fill so it can’t move. A bag in a soft mailer arrives crushed.

Weigh the parcel before you hand it in, and photograph it packed, label visible, in case of a dispute.

## Pricing against the market

Search sold and live listings for the same model and condition before you price. Vestiaire shows the commission when you list, so work back from the payout you want.

Leave room for offers. Buyers on Vestiaire expect to negotiate, and a quick counter-offer keeps them in the chat.

## When the hobby becomes a business

Once you buy pieces to resell, you are trading. Register with HMRC, and look at Vestiaire’s professional seller status, which comes with its own rules on returns and invoices.

Record what you paid for each piece and what it sold for, so your Self Assessment matches any platform report.

## Common mistakes

- Listing a high-street brand wastes a moderation round: Vestiaire refuses fast fashion. Sell those pieces elsewhere.
- Leaving out a close-up of the serial or date code slows approval and puts buyers off.
- Hiding a scuff or a repair leads to a failed check and a cancelled sale. Photograph every flaw.
- Sending a bag in a soft mailer gets it crushed in transit. Use a box with fill.
- Posting after the deadline cancels the sale, so pack the day it sells.

## Questions

### How much does Vestiaire Collective take from a sale?

Listing is free. When the item sells, Vestiaire deducts a commission that depends on the price, plus a payment processing fee. The rates change by price band and country, so check the Selling Fees page in Vestiaire’s help centre before you set your price.

### How does authentication work?

At checkout the buyer chooses between having the item checked by Vestiaire’s experts or Direct Shipping. With authentication, you send the parcel to a Vestiaire centre, which inspects it and forwards it to the buyer. With Direct Shipping, it goes straight to the buyer.

### How do I post a sold item?

Vestiaire gives you a prepaid label for the parcel and a deadline to send it. Pack it in a box with the dust bag, any certificate and accessories you listed, and keep your proof of postage.

### When do I get paid?

The payout follows once the buyer has the item and the sale is confirmed, or once the item passes authentication. You choose a bank account for payouts in your account settings.

### What happens if the item fails the check?

If the experts find the item doesn’t match the listing or isn’t authentic, the sale is cancelled and the item is returned or handled under Vestiaire’s rules. Describe every mark and flaw so the check matches what the buyer was told.

### Does Vestiaire report my sales to HMRC?

Platforms report UK sellers with 30 or more sales, or about £1,700 or more, in a calendar year. A report is information, not a tax bill. Buying to resell is trading, so register for Self Assessment once it becomes regular.
