# eBay

> The UK’s biggest general marketplace. Your setup is about packing fast and finding sold items in seconds.

eBay sellers in the UK ship everything from single cards to boxed trainers. You choose the courier on most orders, so the setup centres on a packing station, accurate scales and a thermal printer linked to your postage tool.

At 50 orders a week, finding the item takes longer than packing it. Give every shelf or tub a code and put it in your listing’s custom label field, so each sold order shows you the shelf.

## Selling on eBay from home

You list items with photos, a title, item specifics and a price, either as an auction or buy it now. Buyers pay through eBay, and you post the item and add tracking.

eBay covers almost every category, and its seller standards reward regular listing and on-time posting. Fees change and vary by category, so check eBay’s help pages.

## Your listing setup

Use a light box for small items, or a plain wall with two soft lights for bigger ones. Take a full set of photos, including flaws, because eBay buyers can return items not as described.

Fill in every item specific. Buyers filter by them, so a listing without them drops out of filtered results.

## Storing stock with location codes

Give each shelf or tub a short code and put it in the custom label field on the listing. It shows on the order, so you can pick without searching.

Store similar items together and keep the codes simple. Stock spread across many places goes missing.

## Postage and labels

You can buy postage through eBay or use Royal Mail Click & Drop, which can import orders from eBay. Either way, a thermal label printer saves time once orders pass a handful a day.

Weigh and measure every parcel. Set your postage options based on real weights, and set a handling time you can meet every week.

## Dispatch expectations

eBay tracks whether you post within your stated handling time and upload tracking. Late dispatch counts against your seller standards.

Choose a handling time that fits your week, and pack orders the same evening if you can.

## Selling on eBay Live

eBay Live is eBay’s livestream shopping, open to UK buyers on the website and in the eBay app. You show items on camera, buyers bid in short auctions or buy at a set price, and eBay charges the winner’s default payment method when the auction ends. You then post each order as a normal eBay sale.

Selling live is by invitation. You register your interest through eBay, and eBay has been adding sellers and categories since the UK launch, with trading cards, coins, toys and comics among them. eBay’s seller sign-up page lists who it is onboarding now, including how many hours a week you can stream.

A listing-only shop needs a photo corner and a packing desk. A live show adds a phone or camera on an overhead arm, steady lights, a clip-on mic and stock laid out in show order, and you pack the winners after you stop streaming. Check eBay Live’s help pages for current fees before your first show.

## Growing past the first 50 orders

Photograph in one session, list in another and pack in a third. Keep packing supplies stocked by size near your printer.

Cross-list items on other sites if they fit, but remove them everywhere as soon as one sells to avoid selling twice.

## Common mistakes

- Skipping item specifics hides your listing from filtered searches, so fill in every relevant field.
- Setting a same-day handling time you can’t keep hurts your seller standards, so pick a time you meet every week.
- Guessing parcel weights means short-paid postage or overcharging buyers, so weigh and measure every item.
- Leaving flaws out of photos invites not-as-described returns, so photograph and mention every mark.
- Forgetting to end a cross-listed item after it sells elsewhere leads to cancellations, so remove it everywhere straight away.

## Questions

### Should I buy postage through eBay or Royal Mail Click & Drop?

eBay’s own labels are quick when every order goes the same way. Click & Drop helps once you sell on more than one platform, because it pulls orders from several marketplaces into one queue. Both print to the same thermal printer.

### Can I use a shelf code with eBay listings?

Yes. eBay’s custom label field (SKU) is private and shows on the sold order. Put a code like B3-02 for bay B, shelf 3, tub 2, and the sold notification shows the location.

### Do I need a business account on eBay?

If you’re buying to resell or selling things you make regularly, you’re trading and should register as a business seller. Check eBay’s current guidance and HMRC’s rules on trading income.

### Should I use auctions or buy it now?

Buy it now suits items with a known price. Auctions suit rare items where demand is uncertain.

### Does eBay report my sales to HMRC?

UK platforms share some seller data with HMRC under digital platform reporting rules. Check HMRC’s guidance to see whether it applies to you.

### How many photos should I add?

Use as many as it takes to show the item from every angle, plus any flaws. Clear photos cut questions and returns.

### Can I sell on eBay Live in the UK?

Yes, if eBay invites you. Register your interest on eBay’s Live seller page; eBay has been widening the categories and seller numbers since it launched in the UK in 2024. Its help pages cover current rules and fees.
