# Whatnot production setup: lights, camera and audio

> Choosing which pro streaming kit to buy first, and which to skip, when your Whatnot shows outgrow a phone and a ring light.

Updated 6 October 2026

Production kit is easy to overspend on. A mirrorless camera with no light on the mat looks worse than a phone with two good panels, and buyers notice bad sound before they notice a soft picture.

The upgrades below run in order of what they change for a buyer watching on a phone, with the trade-offs of each.

## Buy in this order

Sound first, then light, then cameras, then control. A clip-on wireless mic fixes the most common complaint from viewers, and it works with the phone you already stream on.

Lights come next, since every camera you add needs them. Cameras and a button pad only pay off once you stream from a computer.

## Lights: large, medium or battery

A large app-controlled panel is the one to own if you buy a single light. A mid-sized one suits a narrow desk or the second side of the mat.

The battery panel earns its place at fairs or as a low fill for a face camera. It is too small to light a room on its own.

## Cameras: webcam or mirrorless

A streaming webcam with manual exposure handles the face angle well and plugs straight into USB. For the rip angle, a mirrorless camera with a decent lens gives the cleanest card on screen.

The mirrorless route costs a capture stick, a micro-HDMI cable and a mains battery on top of the body and lens. If those add up to more than a month’s profit, buy a 4K webcam instead.

## Capture and control

The capture stick turns the camera into a webcam for your software. A pad of programmable keys switches scenes, and earns its place once you have two angles and a crop.

Skip the pad until you add a second camera.

## Test on a buyer's screen

Record a test, then watch it on a phone with the sound on. Check a holo card, a slab and your voice when you turn away from the mic side.

Ask a regular to tell you in chat when the picture or sound slips. Their phone is the screen that counts.

## Kit for this

- **[Elgato Key Light](https://sellersetups.com/product/elgato-key-light)** (£130 to £160): A 2,800-lumen edge-lit panel that clamps to the back of the desk and changes brightness and colour from an app, so you can dim it mid-show from your seat, out of frame. Suits Whatnot card sellers running two or three evening shows a week, where a slab needs the same light at 11pm as at 7pm. App control needs a 2.4 or 5 GHz Wi-Fi network; on a tighter budget a pair of plain LED panels does most of the job.
- **[Elgato Key Light Air MK.2](https://sellersetups.com/product/elgato-key-light-air)** (£110 to £130): A mid-sized desk panel with app control, sized to sit either side of a rip camera without crowding a narrow desk. Two of them light a card mat from both sides at about 45°, which keeps a bright reflection off holo foil. Pick the full-size panel instead if it’s your only light and you also want your face lit across a wide table.
- **[Elgato Facecam MK.2](https://sellersetups.com/product/elgato-facecam)** (£100 to £125): A desk webcam with manual exposure you set once, so the picture holds steady when a foil card passes the lens. It runs at 1080p and 60 frames a second, which keeps a fast pack rip smooth. Use it as the face camera beside an overhead phone or a mirrorless camera; for detail shots of corners and centring, a 4K webcam crops tighter.
- **[Sony ZV-E10 (body only)](https://sellersetups.com/product/sony-zv-e10)** (£450 to £600): A mirrorless camera with an APS-C sensor and swappable lenses, so a card on the mat sits sharp against a soft background. Turn off the on-screen info and its micro-HDMI port sends a clean picture to a capture stick for your streaming software. Budget extra for a lens, a micro-HDMI cable and a dummy battery for long shows; below about 80 orders a week a 4K webcam is the saner buy.
- **[Elgato Cam Link 4K](https://sellersetups.com/product/elgato-cam-link-4k)** (£85 to £100): A USB stick with an HDMI port that makes a mirrorless camera or camcorder show up as a webcam in streaming software. It takes up to 4K at 30 frames or 1080p at 60, from a USB 3 port. You need it to stream a real camera through a computer; a phone or USB webcam plugs straight in without one.
- **[Elgato Stream Deck MK.2](https://sellersetups.com/product/elgato-stream-deck-mk2)** (£110 to £135): A desk pad of 15 screen keys, each set to one action in your streaming software: overhead camera, face camera, a close-up of the slab, a timer overlay. One press switches the angle mid-show, so you skip the menus while a buyer waits. Buy it once you stream from a computer with two or more cameras; a phone-only stream has nothing for it to control.
- **[RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3)](https://sellersetups.com/product/rode-wireless-go)** (£135 to £180): A clip-on transmitter and a small receiver that plugs into a phone, a camera or a computer by USB, so your voice stays level when you turn to the shelf to pull the next box. The transmitter can also record a backup of the audio in case a stream drops mid-break.

## Setups

- [Pro Whatnot streaming setup for card breaks](https://sellersetups.com/setups/pro-whatnot-streaming): A two-camera studio with app-controlled lights, a button pad for angles and a packing line, for card breakers posting 80 to 300 orders a week.

## Questions

### What should I upgrade first for Whatnot streams?

Audio. A clip-on wireless mic costs less than a camera and fixes the problem viewers mention most.

### Do I need a capture card?

Only to stream a camera with HDMI into software on a computer. Phones and USB webcams don’t need one.

### Is a mirrorless camera worth it for Whatnot?

For high-volume card shows, often yes. For clothing or weekly shows, a webcam or phone is enough.

### Can I use these lights for listing photos?

Yes. The same panels at the same preset give photos that match what buyers saw in the show.

### Does a button pad work with the Whatnot app?

It controls streaming software on a computer. Check Whatnot’s current options for computer streaming first.
