# How to run football card breaks on Whatnot

> Running Premier League and Champions League card breaks on Whatnot: picking a format, filling spots, ripping on camera and posting each buyer’s cards.

Updated 6 October 2026

A football break splits a sealed box between buyers. Each buyer pays for a spot, usually a club, and gets the cards that land on that spot when you open the packs live.

Breaks carry more rules than single-card auctions, because buyers pay before anyone knows what is inside. Whatnot publishes its own guidance on breaks and randomisation in its help centre. Read it before your first break and again whenever it changes. The sections below cover running the show around those rules.

## Read Whatnot’s breaks rules first

Search the Whatnot help centre for breaks and read the current pages on formats, randomisers and what you must show on camera. They set what you can sell and how, and they outrank anything you hear in another seller’s stream.

If the pages leave a format unclear, ask Whatnot seller support before you run it.

## Pick a format buyers understand

Club breaks suit football: twenty Premier League clubs map neatly onto twenty spots. Champions League products cover more clubs, so some sellers group smaller clubs together or use a random team format.

Write the format, the product and the number of boxes in the show title and description. Buyers skip a break they cannot follow from the title and two lines of description.

## Price spots from the box cost

Add the box cost, postage for every spot and your margin, then divide by the spots. Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United spots tend to sell first, so you can price those clubs higher and fill the cheaper spots with a random draw.

Keep the maths in a spreadsheet per product. A Topps hobby box and a retail blaster need different numbers.

## Camera over the rip zone

Mount a phone or camera on an overhead arm pointing straight down at a clear mat. Open every pack inside that frame, so buyers see the cards come out unbroken.

Two LED panels at 45 degrees cut the glare off chrome and refractor cards. Glare hides the numbering, and buyers want to read it on camera.

## Sort hits during the show

Line up one labelled team bag per club along the edge of the desk. As each card comes out, call the club and drop it in that bag on camera.

Put numbered cards and autographs in a toploader before they reach the bag. Base cards can sit together in the team bag.

## Post every spot the next morning

Print your Whatnot shipping labels in one batch and match each label to its club bag. Pack each buyer’s cards in a rigid card mailer.

Royal Mail, InPost, DPD and Evri all carry card parcels in the UK; check which services Whatnot's label tool offers. Choose by what each buyer’s order holds; a single toploader and a stack of fifty base cards rarely belong in the same service.

## Run breaks on a fixed schedule

Run breaks on the same nights each week so buyers know when to come back. Aim for full breaks over big ones. A half-full big break leaves empty spots unpaid, so check Whatnot's breaks guidance for what you can do with one.

Once breaks fill regularly, a second phone for chat and a stream deck for the randomiser screen free your hands for the rip.

## Kit for this

- **[Overhead phone arm](https://sellersetups.com/product/overhead-phone-arm)** (£20 to £35): Card and small-item shows sell on the shot of your hands. An overhead arm holds the phone steady and out of your way while you open packs.
- **[Two LED video panels with stands](https://sellersetups.com/product/led-panel-pair)** (£45 to £75): Holo cards, foiled boxes and glossy packaging reflect a ring light straight back at the camera. With two panels angled in from each side, the glare falls outside the frame.
- **[Resealable team bags, 100 pack](https://sellersetups.com/product/team-bags)** (£4 to £7): A team bag over the toploader holds the card in place and keeps moisture out, for a few pence a card.
- **[35pt toploaders, 100 pack](https://sellersetups.com/product/toploaders)** (£12 to £18): Buyers on Whatnot and eBay expect any card worth more than a few pounds to arrive sleeved and top-loaded. A bent card means a refund.
- **[Board-backed card mailers, C6, 100 pack](https://sellersetups.com/product/rigid-card-mailers)** (£10 to £18): A sleeved and top-loaded card in a rigid mailer stays flat through sorting machines and usually ships as a Large Letter, which costs far less than a parcel.
- **[100 x 150 mm thermal labels, 250 roll](https://sellersetups.com/product/thermal-labels-roll)** (£8 to £13): Put a roll on a holder or inside a printer with a roll bay to save space on a crowded desk. Each label costs about 3p to 5p, a little more than fanfold.

## Setups

- [Whatnot card break setup for sports and football cards](https://sellersetups.com/setups/sports-card-breaks): An overhead rip camera, a sorting system for hits per buyer and Large Letter packing, for running football and sports card breaks on Whatnot and eBay.
- [Pro Whatnot streaming setup for card breaks](https://sellersetups.com/setups/pro-whatnot-streaming): A two-camera studio with app-controlled lights, a button pad for angles and a packing line, for card breakers posting 80 to 300 orders a week.

## Questions

### Are card breaks allowed on Whatnot in the UK?

Whatnot hosts breaks and publishes rules for them in its help centre. Check the current pages there for what applies to UK sellers.

### What is a team break?

Each buyer pays for one or more clubs and receives every card from those clubs that comes out of the boxes opened in the break.

### How many spots should a football break have?

Match the spots to the clubs in the product. A Premier League product fits twenty club spots; bigger competitions need grouping or a random format.

### How do I post break cards to buyers?

Pack each buyer’s cards in a team bag, toploader the hits and send them in a rigid card mailer with the Whatnot label.

### What happens if a break does not fill?

Decide your policy before the show and state it in the description. Whatnot’s breaks guidance covers what you can do, so check it first.

### Do I need a second camera for breaks?

No. One overhead camera on the rip zone is enough to begin with. Add a face camera later if buyers want to see you.
